MMF - I have converted a few vases into lamps over the years. I found filling them with sand made them nice and stable & depending on the width at the top I could use a cork bung if it was wide. If its narrow enough the lamp holder can be pushed in the mouth of the vase & I used the rocker switches that were part of the cable HTH

Glad the leccy's have completed their work GQ - bet you're really pleased not to need extensions any more! It's good too that there was conduit for the cables as I've seen some awful rewires done with trunking running everywhere!

Managed to Kondo a load of bubble wrap from the garage and some cardboard boxes from the loft for DS1 and an amount of leftovers in the fridge for tea tonight & that's about my lot! I did notice a large box in the loft that seemed to have a load of fabric in it so I will get up there next week when I'm not so busy & maybe there's some stuff that can go to the Hospice craft shop ( hopefully all of it!!)
Have a good evening all x

Thanks ScotinLindon, I don't think my standards are higher, just v fussy as I react to most commercial cleaners, esp those with artificial fragrances.

Dragonette - don't think you are being fussy by knowing what works for you and what doesn't.

Edit - sorry that the quote thingy didn't work
  • GQ - it is nice when sparkies, actually any trades people are good and just get on with their work even if you are trying to ply them with tea and biscuits.

We just got our boiler upgraded and they were great even when plied with tea & burgers. It was the same with the carpets and doors people.

We feel very lucky that we found good people to do the work.

Does one eat grapefruit at this garden party???? If so I have 6 silver spoons which were my grandmothers and always referred to as the grapefruit spoons - triangular shape and perfect for scooping out segments from half a grapefruit.....so I am guessing that was their original intention! I will have the spoons back as they do bring me joy even though I dont use them for anything!

Rummaging around in a drawer in my office earlier looking for something, I found a silver and amethyst necklace still in its box, never been worn. I have absolutely no idea who has given me this or how it ended up in a drawer in my office! I don't wear silver as the colour doesn't suit my skin, so will have to find somebody to pass it on to......... which is awkward given that I don't know who gave it to me!

Trying to find a silvercloth (unsuccessful) to give it a bit of a clean I found two bottles of viakal, a load of spare rubber gloves and a roll of binliners I knew nothing about under the sink. Pity I can't find the silvercloth though.

I also found a large file of paperwork which can be shredded and gives me a file to sort a load of bank statements I have to keep for the business and that have been piling up in a cupboard (open the door, chuck them in, close the door) for some time.

  • Slinky, the sebaceous oil in skin works really well for cleaning silver, which is why wearing silver jewellery stops it from tarnishing. Rub it with a cloth and see if that brightens it, and rub it between your hands and try with the cloth again

:( Depends on your skin chemistry. Silver blackens really fast when in contact with my skin, unfortunately.

Silver and amethyst is eminently dip-able. Put it in G0ddard's Silver Dip, it's what jewellers use. You can use if for anythng but stones which are porous; not for turquoise or pearls and there's one of two others which escape me - amethyst is dip-able. It'll come up in about 60 seconds. Most jewellery is too darned fiddly to clean with a cloth. Rinse off the Dip, blot item dry and buff with a soft cloth.

I know what you mean about silver being blackened by skin, mine does it too. I've got some 'delicate jewellery cleaner' liquid stuff which you can use for pearls, I'll try that and report back.

The cloth should work if I could find it as it's just the chain which is one of those snake ones.

Did anyone see back in time for the weekend last night, it was the 80s and it was hideous the decor of the lounge actually made me shudder, that is the decade we can blame for bringing the excess stuff into our homes the lounge was a riot of fake Ming vases, pot pourri, those little niknak shelves and side tables, too many gadgets and gizmos in general and yes ther in its full bad taste glory in the opening scene was the cart horse with one leg longer than the others!

I've finished the quilt I've been working on, I may hand quilt the squares next winter as an evening project but it's usable now so can come out of the Wip pile and be put to use, the Mars binders temples etc are now all bagged up and ready to donate to the CS

I'm going to replace the zip in dads jeans today so they can be returned to him.

    Have a joyful day all.

Yay, the silver cloth has been located and has done a fine job. OH has suggested a recipient for it also, whose birthday just happens to be next month so it will find its way to her. I will tell her it's a regift, as we don't normally exchange presents.

Silvercloth was found in the 'box of cleaning doom' which is in the garage. A while ago I cleared out the cupboard under the sink which is tiny and found it stuffed full of duplicates which you just couldn't see. The box in the garage is very gradually being emptied as stuff in the kitchen gets used up and replaced. I must remember to check there first though before buying any new stuff......sigh.......
