to them we are the scum of the world who took out debt had no intension of paying it back and went bust like it the easy thing to do where in fact most of us had ever intension of paying our debt back but we just couldnt do it through no fault of our own and thats what makes me mad

Earwig - there will ALWAYS be a minority of people who are going to criticise others for not taking the same route as themselves. Within that minority there will, equally, be those who will criticise the actions of others for no other reason than to stir up emotions and create division.
These people are best ignored - the overwhelming majority of posters, on these forums, appreciate that not all choices are available to everybody.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I agree with what your saying but it's easier said than done trying to ignore the trouble makers, especially when they start posting on the BR forum with the sole intention to upset & annoy people...there are some upset/scared vunerable people across these boads some of who are vunerable as it is without being told how disgusting they are for choosing BR

I don't disagree mm, I certainly seem to attract my fair share of 'T Roll's, whether on DFW or Bankrupty Boards, and there are equally vulnerable people on BOTH boards.

I actually feel to take the bankruptcy route takes more 'courage' for want of a better word than to go with a DMP.

The whole court process would scare the pants off me to be honest, so fair play to those who have had to go through it.

Bankruptcy isnt for me - kids, equity etc but I appreciate it can be an option for some.

Live and let live I say. Whats right for one person will be wrong for someone else.

It would be a boring old world if we all made the same choices in life wouldnt it.
Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches

Oh no, not another DFW v Bankcrupts punch up! They're always so one sided - the bankcrupts always win because they've got nothing to lose ;)

I normally stay well away from these, but as someone who is now debt free and completely impartial I'm going to jump in with my usual ill-conceived ramblings that usually only inflame matters :).

I'd say that it's up to the individual to decide what's the right strategy for them. They're the ones who will have to live with their decision and it's really no one's business but their own.

As far as the OP's concerned, going bankcrupt was worked really well and sometimes when you have a solution that has worked for you, it's really hard to see that the same strategy doesn't necessarily work for everybody.

I have to say though that if I lost everything in a house fire (or house collapse) and had 100k in debt and it wasn't my fault, then I'd find it difficult to feel morally obliged to pay it all back over the course of several decades. In this case, I'm with the OP - I really don't understand why anyone would choose so long a term of financial misery.
