As a dressmaker, who only does occasional patchwork, I agree. However, there are a few online shops that will sell a "fat quarter" cut off the bolt - if you buy a longer length, you get a "discount".
I wanted a certain theme for DGS' curtains and couldn't find fabric - OH googled it and was delighted until I pointed out that wasn't the price per metre - it was the fat quarter price! In the end, I used the them fabric as trimming for plain curtains - looks good, and can be replaced as he grows older!0 -
The price people pay for cotton is crazy if it's prettily bundled up and sold "for quilting"0

Today I worked until 1pm, as did the other dressmaker. We have caught up with most of the jobs now. I have a pair of trousers to let out at the waist, two jackets that need zip replacements, one dress that needs hemming, a fancy dress costume that needs a zip replacement, and that's about it.
Then there is a lady who wants a Roman blind done, and a jacket to make from scratch. So by the end of Saturday I won't have anything to do unless more work comes through the doors. We only took £16.50 in money today!
So I am worried. I hope we get the finished items collected and paid for sooner rather then later.
I'm still struggling with lack of energy and tiredness.
I should be doing the housework etc this afternoon, but I was so cold after the schoolrun, I sat down with a cup of tea and a tartan blanket over my knees!

I know the money from the business seems tight, but maybe if you do get time in the shop alone with no work to do, it's an opportunity to expand your online presence? Or maybe make up flyers to post on supermarket notice boards about your courses, children's parties and other services you offer?0

Thanks.
I have a lot of plans for the next few weeks as long as my health recovers quickly enough. The Internet is one of them.
Today DGD is going to be going to her Mums for the half term. This leaves me free for a week to blitz at home, and too work on learning my big embroidery machine.
I have to do what I can with out spending any money at the moment.
More work did come in yesterday and luckily I managed to bank £150 in the morning and then due to people actually coming to collect things we have another £150 to bank this morning and £162 went through the card machine that will reach my account in 5 days.
Today is Roal Dahl day at school so DGD is Fantastic Mr Fox.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
That must have been a great relief to bank good takings. I've had a few panicked and worrying weeks over the years where I've fretted that we're not going to have the money in time to pay the bills, so I know what that "hoping it will be okay but feeling helpless when it comes to bringing it about" feeling is like.
Now I look back, realising in every single instance I ended up with the money I needed, even if it did mean borrowing from Peter to pay Paul or extending the overdraft temporarily at the time, and realise all that panic and worry was a bad habit I had let myself fall into. Nowadays I just think it will be fine and don't actually panic and start to move money around until the payment event is right on top of me and there's going to be insufficient funds to cover everything. Instances of this happening in the last two years after I had my "lightbulb moment"? Once.
I'd love to have sufficient emergency funds squirrelled away to cover three months of expenses just in case, and I do try to build up my defences here and there, £10 or £20 just when I can afford it. Which does actually build up over time. But I'm not impatient about it anymore, not for building the business or for building my emergency fund. I can only afford to grow my business organically now. I'm done with debt, business or otherwise, and thank goodness the debts are now in rapid retreat. If the emergency fund gets to a couple of thousand pounds, it gets there. If it never makes it, I'm not going to fret.0 -
That's a good attitude to have.
We had another good day, £120 banked and another £80 on the bank card that will eventually arrive.
DGD is on her way to Kent as I type.
And I am now completely on my own till a week on Sunday.
It is going to be strange.
But I can focus on the business and the home and hopefully I will be back on track now.
I am still very tired and I think unless I find a second wind I will be having an early night. XWhen I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Good news re the takings . I do hope the next week or so help you to get on with stuff but also get the rest your bodies needs . I am finally getting some energy back after far too long and never want to feel that way again .

I'm exhausted!
I am also extremely cold coming home.
The shop was quiet today, although we had about £70 cash and £24 on the card machine.
I had planned to close at 3pm but finally left at 3.40 as a lady came in for a chat!
I have popped to Tesco and bought myself the £10 dinner for two even though there is only me.
I'm really hungry as well, so I am going to Barton down the hatches, turn the heating up, cook the dinner now and probably be in bed by 8pm again!!
The virus seems to be taking its time to go!
If I wake early I can get up and do the housework when ever as I don't have DGD to wake up!
I figure the body needs rest so it's going to get it!
I have a week to tidy up and sort it after all. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
I hope you have a relaxing evening . A run of early nights helped me so much at least you have a chance for some proper rest now . Wishing you better soon
