I'm not sure why you are arguing with me about anything here. My initial post was just giving plausible examples of how 35gb+ could be used, notably:

"35gb is more along the lines of anticipating a 1-2gb a day use, something you are likely to do if downloading or streaming a lot of films/games (sometimes illegally)"

Apologies if I didn't spell it out but I would have assumed that people would assume that streaming films can include catch up TV (hence the inclusion of "sometimes illegally" as well, to indicate legal use).

I then basically went on to ask another user why my "assumptions" were wrong, to which I've had no reply.

So hopefully that's cleared up. Onto the TV licence point, your circumstances have no bearing on anything. It only highlights that you can purchase a broadband plan which is economical (in regards to the issue being discussed). In OP's case they would theoretically be forking out £420 a year (£35x12) for access to bbc iplayer - it would thus be cheaper to go the Freeview way in their situation. So me thinks there is more than just catch up TV going on (or the initial 35gb plan is unsuitable/a rip off).

What you did that was wrong was to state that "50gb and above is just pure overkill". And to link what you thought was excessive usage to your unpleasant and unnecessary suggestion, which you made more than once, that the op might be doing something illegal.

My point was that 50gb a month is not overkill for some people and can be easily reached legally. (Other posters have also suggested how 50gb is not excessive nowadays.)

My point on the economics of iplayer was simply in response to your point "With the likes of BBC Iplayer you can probably do it for much cheaper on Freeview only". I was showing that it is not the case that everyone will find it cheaper to use Freeview rather than iplayer.

Lastly I don't see any reason for you still saying "me thinks there is more than just catch up TV going on" in your final sentence when the alternative you give "or the initial 35gb plan is unsuitable/a rip off" is much more likely.

One possibility is bbc iplayer (and other catch up players) being used instead of a tv, especially for a large household.

Well watching !!!!!! isn't necessarily perverted (we all do it occasionally, well a good number of people - not 50gb worth like but you know), and not all media streaming is pirated (hence "sometimes illegally" phrase).

I kindly ask you to enlighten me as to how you can use up 50gb a month if it doesn't involve any of the following:

    1. Legal video streaming (movies and youtube)

    2. Legal game streaming

    3. Illegal video and game streaming

    4. !!!!!!

    5. Browsing half (minor exaggeration) of the wikipedia library @ a few kb per page

Just because you couldn't doesn't mean nobody could. For instance, maybe the WiFi password is guessable, maybe it was given to a visiting guest who's discovered they're in range, maybe it was socially engineered, maybe it's WEP which was effectively cracked a decade ago, maybe it's... So the question is worth asking if someone suddenly managed to double their usage.
Although nothing is impossible, you'll find this is highly unlikely. It's very easy to go over your allowance without even noticing, especially these days when websites are no longer designed to save bandwidth.

In case you guys haven't noticed, there are also smart TVs nowadays where you can watch YouTube, Netflix, etc. directly on your TV.

Although I'm not sure how they did it, I recall some relatives of mine streaming TV through an iPad to a TV. Yes, plain old TV and movies rather than !!!!!! and illegal activities.
Big corporations take advantage of the unwary, it's time we learned how to deal with them

  • How could they? unless they've been given the password. I can see my neighbours' WiFi connections but not access them as I don't know their P/Ws.

You would be amazed at how many people don't bother changing the security details from their default settings and still have the user name as 'Admin" and "password" for the password and there are still people who don't have any wireless security at all.

Certainly worth the upgrade if you're caning the data, prices seem not unreasonable to be, either the base rate or the metered rate of £2/GB overage. That's a lot of data you're getting through - are you sure all your neighbours aren't freeloading?

Last month we used 1080GB, normal household with Netflix, Amazon Prime, on-line gaming and normal browsing. (very little !!!!!!, unless lad has figured out how to bypass the filters ;))

Well it is my opinion that using between 1-2 gb on average per day IS overkill on the face of it, but there are scenarios where it would not be the case.

Well I find it unpleasant how you assume that I am accusing the OP of illegal activity (I offered it as one example from many), having a go at me for doing so. In reality, the OP MAY be doing something illegal (I have no proof so would NEVER accuse them) but you'd seemingly rather have a pop at me for pointing that out than to actually explore the possibility. I personally find that baffling because I'm not the potential villain here!

Fair point! I defer to your experience on the matter.

    No arguments there.

    But that makes sense....

Either you use it 99% to watch catch up TV in which case cheaper alternatives exist.

Or you use like a smaller fraction of catch up TV along with maybe netflix, prime, (legal or illegal) game or film downloads etc etc in which case there IS something more than just catch up TV going on...

I did not accuse you of saying that the op had done something illegal. What I accused you of was "your unpleasant and unnecessary suggestion, which you made more than once, that the op might be doing something illegal". The accusation you are baffled by is not one I made.

I certainly would not wish to "actually explore the possibility" that the op might be doing something illegal based on no evidence whatsoever. But I would be interested in your explanation of why your feel such exploration is either necessary or appropriate.

Why do you actually care about what I said? Why does it grind your gears so much?

I didn't explore it. I just included it in a list of possible reasons, most of which involved legal use.

My point is that YOU would seemingly rather argue with me despite the fact that the OP could potentially (but very unlikely) be committing a crime! Hardly seems fair that you'd focus your energy on me when I've done nothing wrong (aside from being a bit "unpleasant", allegedly! Killer "accusation" right there :D). Silence is often the best policy and alas that also applies to me.

I am not being unfair - as you say I am hardly accusing you of something terrible, merely of making what I believe were unpleasant and unnecessary comments without any justification. But I don't think you have done nothing wrong as I don't think it is right to make unnecessary and unpleasant comments without good reason.

I haven't done a thing wrong! It is just you getting your gears ground up for some unknown reason.

I made a list of possible causes of a high data spike, one of which was illegal downloading. I didn't accuse anyone of anything, and I just pointed out something which should be common sense.

Some people are just too sensitive :o

I had hoped you might have appreciated what you did was wrong but clearly you don't. I don't think that reflects well on you but if you don't care then I doubt anyone else does.
