It would but this is MSE, so a switch is cheaper, cable is already installed so why ignore what is already there? And the OP had already purchased and installed a switch over 24 hours before you posted your suggestion?

Also powerline is a nasty bodge* with highly variable effectiveness.

I've got 3 sets here, I can barely get 12mb/s from one side of the house to the other, a neighbour can't get a reliable signal at all.
This is 3 sets with different generations of the tech made by different manufacturers, so not an issue with one make or model.

So definitely not simple and not guaranteed :)

the only reason I don't declare it an utter failure in my case is that it works to provide a connection to an outbuilding over the armoured cable, so at least one set wasn't a total waste of money (it was still about £150 worth of equipment to do a job that could have been done far better by a tenners worth of network cable and faceplates, if it hadn't meant digging up concrete to run it).

*Technically if's quite clever but it's trying to shoehorn in a signal down cabling never intended for it, is very badly affected by noise and can badly affect radio devices.
  • I did say I had tried powerline/home plugs and they were fine for homework/normal browsing but crap for anything else and wireless was faster, hence going down the wired route for the on-line gaming son. ;)
