    Thank heaven for that!
You will be able to download all the Windows Updates so much more quickly than most other people...

no you won't, based on the poor overloaded MS servers..........

.. Unless you're running Windows 10 and all the poor saps local to you are too and still sharing their updates over the faster network ;)

Had previous routers etc but the wife made me clear them all out a while ago in a big sort out before decorating:doh: I told her they would come in useful (along with the draw full of cables and connectors dating back to VHS days ;)) but she insisted.

I have a four port 100/10 PC-Line cheapo switch, probably 20 years old. Endlessly useful.

The Netgear 5 port Gigbabit switch is great, but it's permanently IN USE.

These female people, they want pretty moldings, well turned bannisters, but they don't let you have the tools of the trade. What are you supposed to do, swallow the screwdriver and hammer when you finish putting up a shelf?

I always feel sorry for the OP on these threads. They are just asking for simple advice but all they get is 'gadget boys' who just like to prove that their gadgets are superior to everybody else's. They ask for advice on a £6 switch that runs at 100Mbps. It's perfectly adequate and will do the job required for years to come. The vast majority of people just want to share the broadband connection. Average broadband speed is 20Mbps. So no problem there. Lots of people use wireless that is running at far less than 100Mbps. You'd only notice a difference if you were transferring massive files between the PC and PS4 which very few people would do. The idea that 100Mbps is end of life (EOL) is crazy. Just look at the reviews from normal people buying the product for normal use.

of course they are using Virgin, so if they have a 200mb connection, putting in a 10/100 switch will mean the pc will no longer be able to use the full speed of the connection.

20mb is certaintly not the average speed for virgin connections, and pretty much everyone will have higher

Don't bodge the job with obsolete old crap, it's the price of a beer (in London) to do the job correctly and get it right first time. It's the kind of stupid penny pinching behaviour certain laptop suppliers engage in when they fit 1x1 wireless lan cards in midrange systems, you end up having to retrofit a decent card.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

The problem with future proofing is it is sometimes a waste money by the time you need the feature the prices have dropped.or your use needs have changed and you need something different anyway.

The OP could future proof, gigabit, then add wireless access, why not a print/media/nas server ability just in case,

A router with all that £40, when a £6 switch will do the job.

Suitable gigabit switches are available for under £20; I think in the context of someone who has Virgin BB, multiple computers and a PS4, that's a very "reasonable" amount to spend.

Rather than saying "why spend more for a gigabit switch?", the question should be "why spend less for a 100 Mb one?"; the difference is about a fiver.

I picked up a nice 24 port gigabit managed switch with LAN aggregation for a mere £64

Which for somebody just wanting to add a single device atm would certainly fall into the overkill class. Overkill for most home networks too where unmanaged switches would surely be plenty good enough.

100, going up to 150Mbps in the new year. Get around 103Mbps according to Ookla at the moment.

Got a D-Link 5 Port Gigabit switch for £11, works perfectly.

    Thanks for all the input.
