  • People do have a tendency to see patterns, wher none exist.

I know. I'm a stats geek who did psychology (which is where I became a stats geek). That's why I specifically kept an eye on it over a two month period to check I wasn't losing my mind. NE comes up 3-4 times every 10.

It's not like "oh I've seen a lot of this postcode recently" and turns out it was only twice in the month.

Since November 16th (55 days ago - I started keeping a tally on November 26th at which point there were, as I said, 5 of the last 10 in that area), 21 of the winners have been in NE.

    21 of 55 is 38%

  • I love all this maths/statistics geeky stuff.:j. Thanks, lexbubbles, for starting it:T

You've got me at it now:rotfl:. Just checked a postcode website and came up with a map of the area covered by the NE postcode

    http://www.postcodearea.co.uk/postaltowns/newcastle-upon-tyne/

It's a pretty sizeable area and includes largish towns such as North and South Shields, Gateshead etc as well as Newcastle itself.

I don't do Ashleigh's Lottery myself so don't know if the winner's postcode that's shown is just the area (i.e. NE in this case) or by more detailed district codes.

As Aesop said, the founder is from that area and may have blanket advertising coverage there. Would be very interested to see the proportion of registered members from each UK postcode area though;)

Some other useful postcode info is on good old Wikipedia:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NE_postcode_area

You need to scroll down a long way to get to the maps.

Ha ha I'm a numbers geek too :shhh: I don't play that lottery either...maybe I should sign up? Actually, why have I not signed up? Adding that to my list of things to do today!

I got a shock when I opened my mail this morning and saw that the 0% has run out on my credit card and I'm now paying £117 interest per month  So, being the numbers geek that I am, I've gone through 4 sheets of A4 writing all the scenarios open to me to get it back to 0% without applying for another credit card. Must have a look at Martin's Debt Masterclass, but I found a way that will take a month or so to shift and sort out but will get me another 9 months of 0%. It will mean making an extra £355 per month so this challenge is about to become more crucial than ever! After January there will be no more slacking!!

Get ready to crack the whip at me people, the rest of this month is for getting as much as I can in place for a bumper commitment from February onwards!

Oh, and I received my £5 Tesco money card compensation this morning :)

And I climbed back into bed to number crunch so that I didn't have to put the heating on :money:

What's everyone else up to today?
  • CBC it's just by the area. It's first 2 characters of the postcode, so the only ones that will get vaguely split by area are ones like Glasgow where it's just G+ number

So it'll show G+first number which means that my post area (G40) will just show up as G4 and will be lumped in with, er, the actual G4 and all the other G40somethings (G41,G42 etc) which are actually not even directly linked to each other. So rather than being all of Glasgow it'd just be random areas therein :rotfl:

Also East, North, and West London postcodes (Ex, Nx, and Wx) will suffer the same fate.

But like south surrey/north hampshire which is GU (guildford) is also a very sizeable area and will get lumped in together same as NE: http://www.postcodearea.co.uk/postaltowns/guildford/

Ahaha! You should have seen me when I was paying off my credit cards and actually working out how much interest I'd be paying every month after my repayments and how long it would take me to clear them all.

It's a full detailed budget for an entire year with 'amount lost to interest / real repayment' for 3 different cards :rotfl:

Should have been an accountant, probably.

Nor me either, Siouxsie:rotfl:. lexbubbles is definitely the supremo:T

I'm just a wannabe where statistics are concerned:o. I got maths 'O'level at school and struggled through a compulsory statistics course at University decades ago but we weren't tested/examined on it so luckily didn't have to reach any level of proficiency:j. I absolutely love reading anything with statistics in now but would be hard-pressed to do the mathematical calculations myself:o
