Hi all
Have received my cheque from inbox for £20.03 today but also got a demand for council tax for nearly £500!! There was an issue with the banding as the house had previously been a business and I received a bill from them at the beginning of November asking for two payments of £497 between then and February. I called them to ask if it could be split over 4 months until March and set up a direct debit which the first payment would come out on 1st Dec. When the amended bill came through they had split it into 3 payments with the last one being inFeb still. So I called them againand asked if it could be split into 4 again they said yes and I waited for amended bill. When it came through they had put it back to 2 payments of £497!! Soooo I called them again and asked them to amend it again. By this time it was too late for DD to be amended by 1st so I asked them to change it to 10th which they said they had done. The bill came through correct! Hooray! But it seems they didn't take the money on 10th Dec, which I know I should have checked but didn't realise and so now I owe them 2 months again which is just great as it is only the 5th and I am super skint.
when I saw the demand this evening I cried! The most annoying thing about this all is that I find it really difficult to call them as it needs to be when I'm at work and you always have to hang on for ages and when you get through they are obviously completely incompetent,
Rant over
Thanks for listening
Good night

Shariann, email them as a complaint. You should be able to do it on their website, should be a complaint/feedback bit.
Tell them you are making an official complaint. Also contact your MP and ask them to contact the council and arrange for the payments to be taken ovet 4 psyments. Also that as you are running into next year you need a bit of flexibility on the last payment. Do it asap and keep records.
Otherwise cancel the dd and set up a standing order for the four payments. Pay the first one now, then next month pay second, etc. Email them and keep copy explaining what you hsve done. If they take you to court, the court will be on your side for maintaining payments even though council have messed up.0 -

This doesn't really help but it seems to be a general theme of councils. I think they are understaffed and probably busy at this time of year. And the systems they use are not up to scratch. I was helping my mum sort out her council tax after my dad died, and she got 4 different bills before they got it right, then they still took the wrong amount by direct debit. Part of the problem is the computer just churns out bills and demands for whatever it thinks is outstanding, and this might not reflect what was agreed.
I would agree with Aesop - try to do it in writing/by email if possible then you have a record of what was agreed and can easily refer back to it. Hope you get it sorted without too much more hassle.0 -
Well I had a nice surprise... my wonderful boss has given me an award at work which was £100 of vouchers as a thank you for some extra (unpaid) work I did to help him over Christmas. But when I came to choose my vouchers there is a January offer so the £100 is actually worth £104. I have just taken supermarket vouchers so I can put the cash equivalent into savings.
That's so lovely to hear, TheBanker:T. It's well-deserved Good Karma for you being such a nice, helpful person:A.0 -

I was beginning to wonder where you'd got to, Lynne, as your encouraging posts help to keep us all cheerful and motivated:A.
I'm so glad that your family problem is now sorted:beer:0 -
Just seen in the MSE Email that the Amazon offer for a £7 gift card when you buy £30 of gift cards is back - but only for customers who've never bought a gift card from Amazon in the last 2 years. I guess this rules most of us out but hope it helps someone: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/amazon#amazonfree70
