May I also enquire whether you pay tax on your internet business?
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

    Is that clever, or crafty??

Both I think. Bit of dyslexia, yet a genius with computers, entirely self educated, very streetwise. Very straight and honest with friends & family. I will let him comment on his attitude to the TV licence man, I have given up on that one! Reading his latest post, it looks as if he may have found a solution, hopefully. All I can say is that if his financial situation is analogous to flying near the ground, he had better check his undercarriage for leaves and branches. And learn to fly properly, lol!

    Oh - OK (yeah, right)

I think he will, he has done a bit of local advertising and he has started to get some jobs in.

Just been on the phone to SLG, he is going out again to meet the guy who has promised him the work. Says he will post his SOA, this will be soon, within a few days.

Had a chat with him, and he said it was OK for me to disclose a few more things. Seems he told a few porkies on his mortgage application, mainly to get out of the area where he lived, because quite a high profile murder was committed near where he lived, was on a rough estate where stabbings occur, and did not want his son joining a gang. He knew this would create problems later, and of course now he has to deal with them. Now he is really happy with new neighbourhood, and school. Also he said that he asked Nemo for £20k, they gave him that, then phoned him up and offered a further £10k, which he took. Similarly, he bought a car, and they offered him finance too even though he said he had the money. So it looks as if these companies are not acting very responsibly (no surprise there I know). Anyway, discuss that with him.

He also says thanks to everyone here, being from where he was brought up (Sarf London) he says he is not used to people being nice to him, and is a bit ovewhelmed as to how how keen people here are to help! So he says thanks all.

Says he will be back here when he has time, tonight maybe, or within a few days. Anyway, he IS very grateful!

    Cheers all

Could you let us know where you got your TV licence? Best price I could find was £11.29 a month :D

dont know how mate, but all I know is that our direct debit went down this year to a few pence over £9 a month. Im not complaining! perhaps it does this after paying it for a while? or a DD discount? who knows!

He said it's Ok to tell you yes, it is a Ltd company, he is the director, he uses an accountant and pays corporation tax. I know that because I know his accountant too!

Mine says £131.50, but payments vary, I see, up to 1 Nov 2006 it was £10.99, then £11.37 with a few odd payments for rounding. It's so complicated, the payments end on mine in May, but the licence runs up to November. Typical bureaucratic tangle

    later...

From memory, isn't your first one over a shorter period, eg. 8 months, then you pay over 12 months next year but the payments are made in advance?

d'ya know what Mousey?? I really have no idea  !! I tried to understand the way TV licenses work once a few years back when we first got one. The whole paying up front for a year then six month something........well......my brain imploded!

I decided that from that day forth I would merely accept it as the stealth tax that it is. And also know never to change names or anything on it. Mine is in OH's name. A colleague wanted to change hers from her ex's name so she didnt have the yearly reminder of the g*t, but she was told she'd have to do the expensive 6 months again! So she kept it as it was. Im sure it all makes sense to some god like mp type bbc creature high up in the sky!! If they wanna charge me a few pennies less this year then cool!

I think that is why SLG treats it with contempt, he knows it is a stealth tax. He regards that, speed cams and other things as instruments that the government uses to get money out of people. The funny thing is I first met him when I was parked at traffic lights in the 1990s and responded to a poster that said "calls from mobiles, only 5p a minute". I am from a legal background, and I found SLG to be --- well --- interesting!!! The thing we had in common that we were both moneysavers and have similar outlooks, and here we are today on this forum, which didn't exist then.
  • Well, here's what the Beeb have to say about paying for your TV licence monthly All clear now?

If you would like to spread the cost of your licence fee by paying monthly, our most popular plan is for you.

This plan spreads your licence fee over 12 monthly payments. However, payments may vary for the first licence bought in this way. If you don’t already have a licence or if you apply later than six months before your licence is due for renewal, you will need to make fewer but larger payments.

For example, if you don’t have a licence when you make your first payment, you will make 6 or fewer monthly payments (depending upon the expiry date of the licence which has been issued to you), by monthly Direct Debit. The following month you will start paying approximately one-twelfth of the licence fee each month for your next licence, making six payments before it is due and six after. Your total payments will always add up precisely to the normal licence fee and there is no additional charge for spreading your payments using monthly Direct Debit.
