I think a lot of what he says does not add up and I am not alone - shoot me for being honest but shoot him for dishonesty too!

And why do you keep coming on here for "him" he does not seem bothered now?

You are assuming that he is dodging tax authorities because he was not given a payslip, yet you attached that comment to the fact that he "bought" a phone 2 days before he was paid. However the first thing he did was to phone the tax office.

It's not just that, Mouseclick. He's alluded to other, shall we say, less than honest practices. Look at this from post #39
I am popping out tonight to see about some paid work so I will try to update it later, my telephone is taken out my business monthly income, TV licence I hide when they come round. I give a different name when they knock then when I get a summons return it as not at this address, had to do this before when I was in trobble.

The bold is mine, of course.

  • 1) SLG's actions in the past and possibly still going on, such as avoiding paying a TV license, are wrong but it is his decision to do this. However people on here would be well within their rights to tell him they disagree and refuse to help based on the grounds they do not condone this kind of thing, as has already been said.

    2) There's also a lot of speculation on how legit his business etc are, which I think is unfounded and some comments I think have gone a little too far in the way of judgment of this person. I do believe we should point out things if they do not sound right, and where he may not be aware that something needs to be checked, e.g. the situation with the accountant where some people are concerned it sounds too cheap etc.

    3) If he comes back and posts his SOA I for one will still post advice on how to best deal with his financial situation, this includes stopping any more evasion of license fees etc as soon as possible.

    4) We're hearing information 3rd hand via Mouseclick, plus things posted on forums can come out sounding wrong as they are typed not said in person where you can pick up which is meant by tone of voice and body language. I think some of this has lead to assumptions about what he is up to. However I see where Mouseclick is coming from in defending the actions of a friend.

    5) I'm certainly not defending SLG, but trying to remind people that the purpose of this forum is for people to get help with their debt, If they continue to spend irresponsibly and don't post an SOA as advised then they won't get good advice. Telling someone avoiding paying their TV license is fine, carrying on about it and judging other aspects of their life I don't agree with.

    6) I think SLG needs to post his SOA himself, along with any other info otherwise it will hit a dead end where ocassional info from Mouseclick will cause more assumptions to be made and not really help him in any way.

Again you are completely wrong, there are some suggestions being passed by PM because of the malicious nature of this board and they are very helpful. You say he is "not bothered", more smears. But he is. He is just up at 5am digging roads. Again I will not comment any more, unless I see something that is blatantly wrong, such as "not bothered". But even if I do I may not bother to comment anyway, because in doing so I will drag myself down to that level. Some of the comments make this board is more like the Spanish Inquisition than a help forum for debt free wanabees. It will probably frighten off others.

You are putting "him" in inverted comments. Not trying to say that we are the same people again are we, as you did before? Conspiracy theory and all that? I don't really want to know the answer...

guys come on this really isn't helping things. Shall we just leave this thread here and let it go? arguing between you won't make slg have his full lightbulb moment any sooner and he will at some point.

Theres no point arguing over someone who isn't hear to speak up for themselves.

But it may be completely futile unless he has a firm grasp of his budget - and unless he understands that "a job" does not make him rich so he can just spend.

I can appreciate your position - and your frustration is understandable. I think you've already said that HE must grasp the nettle.

My concern is his failure to do so. I really think either you or he (or both of you) will back in a few months time when his debts have truly spiralled out of control and he is being hounded by debt collectors, bailiffs, defaults and Court Summons (the ones he can't escape!).

Rather than shutting us out ..... why not shut him out and tell him to get the hell over here? Or to CCCS, National Debtline or Payplan? No offence, but there is only so much you can do.

And, to be honest ... as the lawyers say "Your clients never give you 100% of the story".

It is quite possible that he is not telling you "everything". To be fair, you have no idea whether or not his business is legit - you would have to be involved in the day-to-day operation and bookeeping to know this, for sure. As his friend, you are bound to think the best of him ;)

I have just sat and read the whole thread.

Initially, I was deeply concerned for SLG and was sincerely hoping for a resolution to his debt problems. Then I read about his dodgy dealings and his nonchalant approach to his debt responsibilities and other official dues. From his first post on the 28th August to today, 19th September, he still has not posted a full and comprehensive SOA. Now he appears not to be bothered.

In conclusion, I think you are all a most kind, helpful and patient lot on this board, and that he doesn't deserve your energy any longer.

    That's just my 2 cents!

Well said.:T Initially he was desperate, facing the loss of his house. Then he got a job within days of his OP through his own efforts (mainly due to the fact that this forum made him write down and realise how much he owed in total). That job he got trebled his income and changed things a lot. His relief was enormous. You may as well forget about him until he is ready, then he will speak for himself. He still has the debts, but for now his immediate problems have gone. He is very grateful to the people here who helped, particularly to whoever sent him the SOA spreadsheet.

    Right here goes
For what it is worth, I think a well done is in order to SLG for taking his head out of the sand and getting a job, any job asap, to start sorting things out. Anyone who has been in serious debt (and serious is a perception not an amount), know the feelings of feeling sick, can't think straight, don't know where to turn etc, so why should SLG be any different.

It seems to me that he is a person who thinks to solves things by taking physical action, rather than sitting down and working things out with a coffee and a load of bills. Perhaps he feels that if he is moving sorting things, then he won't have to do the budgeting etc. We know that this isn't so, because without wading through the paperwork there is no way to prioritise your debts, so that you money works the hardest for you.

But I am sure he will get there in the end.

SLG I am still worried that you may not have told your wife how bad things are, and that she needs to economise as well as start sorting out an income. I appreciate that she is running the web site, but a salaried income will be needed from her as well, if you really want to knock the debt on the head. Like I said before, I would be unbelievably angry if I had been kept in the dark about this level of debt. I would think that I wasn't trusted, or worse that my OH thought I was to thick to be able to help. If you tell her, then maybe SHE can do the wading through the paperwork to sort out a SOA for the FAMILY first, before you decide whether to post it on here or not.

But busting the debts will need to be a team effort from both of you. There is no point in you busting a gut working all hours to get a decent wage, if your OH's spending habits don't change, through her ignorance.

    Best of luck
