Although it's possible she wasn't as ill as she said, what was she off sick for? For example, stress, depression, anxiety...none of them are reasons not to leave the house and be driving somewhere. Can look perfectly fine and not be.

Even if she was really ill, sometimes people have to go somewhere. They may not want to go anywhere, they may struggle to do so, but they do it anyway because they have no choice. Having to pick a kid up from school if no one else could, for example.

If off sick long term they may have a meeting before starting back. They may not have felt 100%, but be recovering and be waiting for a meeting with a manager to start back.

There are many reasons to be off sick and be out somewhere and not be at work the next day other than them faking illness.

She was off for 3 days, I saw her on the second. No kids, something along the lines of sickness or a cold etc. She didn't live anywhere near where I saw her either. Point is, I didn't say anything to her, or to anyone else, just let her get on with it. Benefit of doubt was duly given!

Incidentally with that same job I remember one time I was talking to a colleague I was friends with and realised I hadn't had a day off sick in over 4 years.... her response to that was 'well whose fault's that then?'. Back then, there was a bit of a culture for feeling entitled to have some days off sick once in a while, especially as they were on full pay. In that particularly job anyway.

Somebody sneaked out of work early, got caught and you have sympathy for them. You'd make a great manager

It's called giving the benefit of the doubt. We don't know why they left early and they may not have seen as sneaking out early, they may have missed a break to leave early.

I know and the kid was just an example.

Maybe she started to feel better, went out somewhere (perhaps needed to for whatever reason) and then felt worse again for doing so. People do that all the time, they start to feel better, try to do too much and regret because they end up feeling bad again when instead they could have continued resting and felt much better the next day.

Not saying that is the case here, but you never know. Best to give the benefit of the doubt, as you did. Just a shame that it didn't happen in the situation with the OP.

Yeah, that's not a good point of view to have. I suppose if you have really been too sick for work and forced yourself in anyway then that'd be your choice and your fault if complaining about lack of time off when ill. Otherwise it's good you've had no time off! Looks good on you, especially if you were to go for a new job.

Just an update. Lass is back in today (so no suspension or loss of job as far as I can see - for those worried someone would be out on their ear for Christmas)

Today we had a sit down meeting to plan out returning to structured shift scheduling rather than the flexitime and there were actual tears shed (for the young single mums or those with a complex family dynamic flex was a godsend)

It appears from comments made during that meeting that there was no permission or extenuating reasons for the early finishes (yes they said early finishes!) and it was blamed on 'confusion' on how flex worked. As there cant be 'confusion' about 9/5.30 with a set lunch that's what we are going back to.
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

Tears shed-How dramatic. How long had this trial been operating for, it sounded like days only?

3 months. not long in the scheme of things, but long enough to get used to it I suppose.

I only really used it to get round rush hour traffic that being said I don't have kids/families/older relatives to look after.

I did love a really early finish on a Friday though.

Shame she had to ruin it for everyone, I don't really get the posters in this thread feeling sorry for her and putting the blame elsewhere.

Do you all get angry at witnesses to crimes?

I daresay she'll be about as popular as a pork chop in a synagogue with the rest of the team for quite a while...

    That's hardly the same thing.

She only left 20 minutes early and people felt sorry for her because she got sent home, indicating she may well have lost her job right before Christmas just because of 20 minutes which may well have been for a genuine reason.

I wouldn't say I felt sorry for her, but it's not fair to judge when we don't know the reason. As it turns out, she did come back to work so the reason was obviously genuine or she just had a verbal warning.

As advised, not so much a genuine reason. The reason given was she got 'confused' at how flex worked and as they said there were a number of 'early finishes' so I doubt it was a one off, so I concur likely a warning of some description.

It turns out she was seen a number of times by staff ....but no one wanted to say anything.. so I think she started leaving earlier and earlier thinking no one was noticing. I bet it started leaving 5 mins early.. then 10..

As such the 'overlord' has said that you cant get confused with 9/1730 with a set lunch so we will revert to that.

    Not that same at all

If the OP and the other person had any kind of people skills , they could have had a quiet word in her ear and saved all the tears as it should never have got as far as the TL for one incident

The op says that the team were all for flexi, all wanted it to work for them and knew it would just take one word to pull it, yet his first thoughts were to 'dob her in'

Not what I would class as a team player
