pulled for speeding

I was pulled for speeding last night. I performed an overtaking maneuver to get past some traffic on a dual carriage way in the evening and didn't realise a police car was behind me at the time. I'm pretty sure I went above 100 mph but for only a short period of time and slowed down/ pulled into the slow lane again shortly after but still unaware they were behind me. I was asked if I knew what speed I was doing but I said I was unsure, which was fair to say because I was concentrating on the road at the time. He issues me a summons but only wrote the speed limit of the road on the ticket stating that I had exceeded it and not my actual speed. Not entirely sure what to make of that because they filmed it but only with their speed on the the video as they caught up to me. Now I am unsure what to expect if there was no actual speed recorded on the ticket at the time. It was really stupid of me i know! I only saw headlights and had no idea it was a police car at the time... Does anyone know things are judged in this case?

Not ideal!
All the speed monitoring is done electronically in their car, despite the fact they haven't written the speed you were doing on the ticket, they will have a record of it!
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do despite not knowing it was a police car/what speed you were going!0 -

Firstly, this is not a forum for speeding.
If they had an onboard camera which depends on the duty car, then they have a video. You'll only know when the post arrives, watch your speed, especially this time of year0 -

He knows that he will be able to check the video to show that you exceeded 70, which is the offence, so doesn't need to look at the video to determine whether it was specifically 98 or 85 or 80 before he tells you you are going to be prosecuted.
They will look at the tapes and decide what to do with the evidence collected. The minimum penalty is 3 points / £100 (or in some circumstances a driving course). If your speed was demonstrably in three figures or you were driving dangerously you could face a ban. The police can issue you with a penalty (which you can choose to fight in court) or send the case straight to court who will let you plea guilty or not guilty in advance.
Either way you'll get something in the post. You said you received a 'summons' but if it didn't summon you to attend court at a particular day and time then it is just a warning that they plan to 'do you' and some paperwork will follow.
You've posted this in the Parking subforum of the general motoring forum. That's the main one that people use for general motoring stuff like getting caught speeding.0 -
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Sorry for wrong place.... I wouldn't say I was driving dangerously, even the PO said that. I just pushed on too much for a short stretch of road. I actually assumed he wanted to pass and pulled over to the left asap, just didn't realise it was a police car. He was following up quite closely so I got out of the way. He just stayed behind me though, obviously. I clicked that it was strange at the time but didn't think anymore of it because I was close to the speed of the road at that time. I guess I will have to wait and see. I actually have a completely clean license at the moment though. I just know I was somewhere above 100mph but I doubt by a silly amount.0

@OP You suggest that the officer issued you a summons. Are you sure it was a summons (these are not issued by officers) or was it actually a fixed penalty - although if you were above 100 I would think that unlikely? Perhaps another read of what you were given would assist?
Alternatively did he tell you that he was reporting you for summons?
There is no necessity that the officer specifies a particular speed or a range of speeds just that you exceeded the limit.
If you have been issued with a fixed penalty I would pay that promptly, accept the 3 points and thank your lucky stars. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -
if you went above 100mph its highly likely you will be summoned to court..where disqualification is likely..
Im suprised they didnt show you the video or laser device indicating your speed..Sealed pot challenger # 10

Perhaps they didn't because they weren't behind the OP for a long enough time/distance to get an accurate measurement, thus a fixed penalty for exceeding the speed limit.0 -
Its was a NIP I think, stating that I will be reviewed. He said at the time it will be decided if they want to pull me into court or if they will issue fine and points. Certainly wasn't an on the spot fixed fine. Just hope having a clean record will help. Really don't want to be banned. I just don't know the process anymore and wondered why my actual speed wasn't recorded on the carbon copy I was given. I was sure that is what holds the nature of severity in the situation, particularly as I was sure I was in triple figures?0

So are you saying that you were only speeding because you didn't think you would get caught? Whichever way you look at it, doing a ton on a dual carriage way is both dangerous and stupid. You exceeded the speed limit by at least 30mph, meaning you were travelling 43% faster than the speed limit (assuming it was 70mph). Does that actually sound reasonable to you? If the traffic you were overtaking was slow why did you need to do such high speeds to overtake it? Or was the traffic in fact travelling at the speed limit and you wanted to travel faster? Either way you have acted in such a way as to put other motorists at risk and frankly deserve whatever punishment the law ultimately dishes out to you. What troubles me is you don't seem to think you have done anything wrong, that travelling that fast is perfectly acceptable. It isn't.
The police have given you a ticket, a record that they caught you breaking the law (speeding) and that they intend to prosecute you for it. This is a Notice of Intention to Prosecute. The offence, as bowlhead99 has said, was breaking the speed limit and that is what was recorded on the ticket. The speed limit you broke determines which offence code you are charged with (most likely SP50 if you were on a motorway or SP30 if not), hence why that was recorded. Your actual speed will impact on the severity of the punishment you receive, and this was documented by the police car's video. This will be used as evidence against you if you end up in court.
In the next few days you'll receive further paperwork either offering you the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty (points + fine) or summoning you to court. The latter is more likely if they intend to pursue a higher fine and/or a ban. You have the opportunity to refuse the fixed penalty and go to court if you wish but given they have video evidence of your speed, or at least your approximate speed, i think it's extremely likely you would lose and you run the risk of a harsher punishment at the hands of a magistrate than the fixed penalty would have been. If you are summoned to court you have no choice but to attend. While a ban isn't automatic, even for speeds in excess of 100mph, it does form part of the magistrates sentencing guidelines so it is a possibility. The alternative is usually 6 points. Whichever you end up with you'll most likely also get a fine and have to pay costs as well.0
