How Much to Cancel my BT Phone/BB Contract
Comments
-
It's really quite scary how many people enter contracts without any understanding of what they are agreeing to. The OP would have had the conditions he agreed to sent to him yet he simply doesn't understand.
The fact he thinks any house rental regardless of contract signed can be given up with a month's notice is worrying. This kind of disinformation could be very expensive to anyone who just believes it without checking their individual contract.
I'm no fan of BT but in this instance they are in the right.
If the OP was really smart he would move to a provider who was prepared to either pay the contract off for him or at least contribute part of it but he's probably left this too late now.
As for years ago the OP is presumably referring to the good old days when BT had the monopoly charged a fortune, no inclusive call packages 3-6 months wait for a line to be installed and an automatic #100 installation fee even if you were moving home as an existing customer and there was already a line at your new property.
Sorry but I never got anything in writing, all they do is refer you to their terms and conditions ON LINE !
As I said, if you sign a rental contract for a house without knowing you can;'t give a month's notice, you need certifying ! I don't rent, I own my own home but as I said my granddaughter, my son and my daughter have all rented for years various properties and NEVER had to give more than a month's notice.
In actual fact I am now arranging with my granddaughter to take over the contract as she will lose out on her's when she moves and would have to pay a rip-off reconnection fee plus any new equipment, so it is in her interests to take over our contract until it expires when she can tell them to stick it ! We have offered to pay the difference between what she is paying and what ours costs us, as her contract is slightly different and cheaper.
Which is why people did WITHOUT a phone line as did my parents for years !
You know you don't have to be held for ransom, you can tell them to stick it, leave without paying (which is what millions do), or do without the service - THERE ARE CHOICES PEOPLE !0 -

Some of the choices are legal and others will land you in deep water.
You made the wrong choice - deal with the consequences.Sorry but I never got anything in writing, all they do is refer you to their terms and conditions ON LINE !

Then they had tenancy agreements which allowed it.In actual fact I am now arranging with my granddaughter to take over the contract as she will lose out on her's when she moves and would have to pay a rip-off reconnection fee plus any new equipment, so it is in her interests to take over our contract until it expires when she can tell them to stick it ! Unless your granddaughter is just going to pay for you and live in your house pretending to be you, that may not happen either.0 -

RATHER STUPID CHOICES, but yes choices with consequences.
Millions leave without paying, i think it is more like 47.675% (or some other made up figure) who do.0 -

The mistake was mine, you are right, I don't usually get caught out but we have had a lot of trauma in the family to deal with and it caught me at a time I couldn't concentrate on mundane matters.
However as you say there are two ways of dealing with it, one way or the other they will not be getting over £200 out of me for what I consider as nothing ! They get paid far too much which is why they make billions in profits, not millions ! I don't break the law generally either.
As for my granddaughter, she is taking over the utilities in her name and her partner's, they need to as they are both teachers and need the verification for the CRB checks they undergo.0 -

Then she won't be taking over your contract as they are not transferrable. You will still have to cancel yours and pay the remainder of the contract. Then she will have to organise her own.
Point 60 of T&C.60.You accept that the agreement for the service is personal to you and agree not to transfer it to anyone else, or to try to do so.
You made a mistake but instead of blaming everyone else you need to accept that fact and move on.0 -
These contracts are none transferrable, she cannot just take over your contract.
She won't, I will continue paying the monthly rental on the package until the renewal date comes up, she will reimburse me and then I will give notice to cancel the service and she will arrange her own ! When I said she will be taking over the contract, I probably should have said she was taking over the payments TO ME ! Same difference as far as I am concerned, she has the use of the equipment and is paying for it - to me instead of BT and I am paying BT!0 -

Amazing how everyone misreads what I say ! I didn't blame ANYONE BUT MYSELF ! I went to pains to explain why I made the mistake so how can you say I am blaming anyone else ?0 -

So as I said earlier - she's pretending to be you.
Both of you are breaking the T&C of the agreement - best watch out if her CRB check is important to her.as she will lose out on her's when she moves and would have to pay a rip-off reconnection fee plus any new equipment,
As a new customer with a BT line already in place, she will not have to pay any reconnection fee nor pay for any new equipment apart from P&P. This does not have to be with BT.
Let's hope she isn't in a contract elsewhere and has cancellation fees. If she is, it might be cheaper for her to move her services to the new address.0
