How Much to Cancel my BT Phone/BB Contract

I will be 5 months into a 12 month contract for my phone and BB deal when I leave the country and will need to cancel , how much notice will I have to give and how much penalty will I have to pay ?

Pay 7 months if you cancel before your contract finishes and leave as you say .

I did read that, but I thought it was just a general example of what you could end up paying. I can't believe that I would have to pay 7 months rental which would cost me over £210 !!!!!!!!!!!

If I rent a house on a 12 monthly contract, I have to give one month's notice !! That is what I would expect is fair. I reckon there are many more instances too where you just give one month's notice, in fact years ago that was EXACTLY what you used to have to give to terminate your telephone contract.

When you got connected BT would not have charged you any connection fees.
They would have just charged you a delivery charge for the BT Home Hub around £6.95

You entered a contract with BT and are now choosing to end it early.

BT are now recovering the costs that they incurred to connect you in the first place.

Seems fair to me.

If you're on a fixed 12 month rental contract you will still be liable for rent from the remainder of that contract. In some cases there may be a break clause but it's all in the contract.

i think you're having rather selective memories. You agreed to a new 12 month contract and got a lower price and a voucher for doing so. Now you want to leave 5 months into that agreement and expect there to be no cancellation fees - would you be so happy if BT had gone back on the deal?

at the end of the 12 month contract you give notice, not part way through. You are, in your house example just as liable for the 12 month contract cost to the end as you are with BT.

Years ago i could go out for the night with 2 bob, and still have change for the bus home. What has years ago got to do with NOW?.

Where did I say I didn't expect a cancellation fee ? A 3 month penalty would have been fine with me but 7 months ! I think that is completely unfair.

As I said when you rent a house the landlord expects to rent the house to you in a habitable condition and in many cases does repairs or decorations to make it "market ready". Then you pay one month's rental upfront and a month's notice to leave and we are talking £500-600 per month. What if landlords insisted that you cover the remainder of the 12 month lease period when you gave notice? I would be looking at paying over £4000 !!!!!!!!!!!!

As I said unrealistic and if I ever come to take another phone line it will be without a 12 month contract or I will make do with a PAYG mobile. I feel that communication companies have become very greedy just lately which is why I got rid of my TV package with spiralling costs and now make do with Freeview and Freesat, make no mistake they make a packet out of TV contracts, they are not fishing around for small costs of setting up a phone line which in many cases costs them nothing ! No company is going to hold me to ransom. No wonder people are up to their eyeballs in debt, it doesn't surprise me one bit. Lose your job and you are really in sh*ts ville if you have these contracts.

I hate being robbed !!

Wrong, they attempted to charge us £150 and when we questioned it they came out with the usual clap trap about, we don't know what condition the line will be in (though it had only been connected a few months before) and we might have to send out an engineer to sort it. They did exactly the same at our last house and charged us £150 there too ! ! Believe me they got any costs back of putting the line in or back on, they make sure they do.
