What the bank says doesnt match...

I'm hoping someone can help...

I went to my local branch a few weeks ago to make an account joint with my girlfriend. The girl I spoke to said it wasn't advisable as my girlfriend had excellent credit with many products available but I had "very poor credit" with several warning markers against my name!!! She advised us that by linking our accounts it would bring my girlfriends credit rating down. As we are looking to get a mortgage in the new year we decided against doing it. She also advised me to contact Experian and get my credit report to see what is causing the "warning markers".

Fast forward 2 weeks...

I have got my credit report and I have scored 972 out of 999 which is comfortably in the excellent bracket. I have zero negative markers and 10 positive markers. I have no outstanding payments or anything that I can see that would have a caused an issue. This totally contradicts the banks information.

I have been in to my branch today armed with my credit report and asked them what they can see on their system that shows as a warning marker and was told that they cant give specific information and they just go off what their system says. The girl I spoke to was away from approx. 15mins with her boss going through my credit report and they both agree my accounts are fine and up to date and doesn't match what the banks system says but they still cant give any further information about the warnings. They even brought the branch mortgage advisor in who said that my credit report and salary would make me an attractive mortgage customer.

Has anyone been in this situation themselves and what did you do about it? Or can anyone advise how I can find out what the warning markers are and since they don't match my credit report can I get them removed?

Cheers in advance...

Given that you've quoted your 972/999 "score" (which is meaningless I hate to tell you) suggests to me you've only looked at your Experian file.

There are three main credit agencies within the U.K.

You need to look at Noddle (Callcredit) and Clearscore (Equifax). Both are free of charge services. Ignore the "score" quoted on both sites but one of these may/may not have the mysterious adverse information.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

I agree with the PP, check all three CRA's.

Here is the link for Noddle and Clearscore. They are both free.

Hopefully you will get to the bottom of this.

  • We applied recently with Halifax for a mortgage - I had my Experian file in front of me, showing nothing adverse, gave it to the broker who happily submitted our application. Halifax immediately referred us to credit referencing and asked me to explain the adverse credit on my account which baffled me. Having joined Noddle as per the brokers advice and checked it, there was an old settled default from 5.5 years ago - Halifax said they understood I couldn't originally see it on Experian and were happy with my explanation of what it was and the fact that it had been cleared almost instantly as well. I went back to Experian and it turned out I was paying £14.99 per month for a service which wasn't showing my previous name before I got married, and wasn't showing my full address history or electoral roll details because of the name issue. Once they rectified it, all the info suddenly appeared.

You need to be aware that there are 3 agencies, but also what you see isn't necessarily what the banks or lenders are seeing depending on name and address changes. Im still waiting for my complaint with Experian about this to be resolved.
