Component to HDMI

Options
Hi

Apologies if this is in the wrong place - can someone please move it if it is.

I have an LG50PK790 plasma TV which no longer recognizes any of the HDMI devices I wish to use with it (corrupted signal apparently). A new board is £250 plus fitting from LG and I can't source a reconditioned one anywhere.

However, I have been told that if I use a component to HDMI converter with an HDMI switch I'll be able to get round the problem.

The switch box is fine and I've ordered one - however, every component-HDMI cable I've looked at says it doesn't convert the signal.

Does anyone know what it is I actually need? If it hadn't been such an expensive TV in the first place I'd look to replace it but am loathe to do so!

Many thanks in advance!

You would need to have an electronic box to convert the digital HDMI signal into an analogue component signal. They probably exist but won't be particularly cheap.
  • Thank you! So how would I set this up? Component to component to the box and then HDMI to HDMI between the box and the HDMI switchbox?

I've been scouring some forums and keep seeing people talking about the 'baking' method (seems to involve putting the board in the oven). Not sure if this is an internet hoax or a known way of fixing what appears to be a fairly common problem with LG TVs - anyone know anything about this?!

It's not a hoax but it may not fix the issue. If the problem is down to a joint with not enough solder on it then heating the board in an oven could melt the solder enough for some to flow around the problem joint giving a better connection and so fix the issue.

Obviously there are many risks to consider before you try it.

Sounds like the "reflow" method that people used with things like X-boxes and some video cards.

As Wongataa says it can work but it can be slightly risky, however if it's a reasonably common problem with the board you may be able to find out if it's a specific component that is having issues and just do the solder for that one part, but the bake/reflow method is the only chance for an average home user if it's certain parts such as multipin surface mounted chips.

Perhaps you could list the devices you own and need to connect to the TV and which types of output they have available and what types of input you have on the TV. Deciding which is the best option will depend on what is available. Sometimes of connectors can be converted easily, like HDMI->DVI and some are very difficult. HDMI to Component is going to be one of the more expensive options as it's digital to analogue. But component is quite high quality for an analogue connection.

Thanks for all the help - can you tell I don't have a clue what I'm on about?

The TV is an LG plasma approx. 5 years old (which by looking at some other forums is very common manufacture period to be experiencing this problem).

I want to connect my LG home cinema system. It has a blu-ray player although I couldn't tell you the last time I watched a DVD. I prefer to hook up my laptop to that to stream films / music. I also want to connect an Amazon Firestick (HDMI) so I can stream movies that way. So I suppose the home cinema system would just be for sound (my toddler broke the ipod/iphone dock so that's out!)

Any help anyone could offer would be much appreciated...my boiler, vac, toaster and towel radiator are all on their last legs so an cost effective fix would be great :)

    ETA connections available:

    TV:
    4 x HDMI (not recognized),
    Component
    Antenna
    LAN
    RGB in PC
    Audio IN (RGB/DVI)
    Optical Digital Audio Out
    2 x USB
    RS-232C IN (???)
Video L/MONO-AUDIO-R (this is AV in 2?)
    PCMCIA Card Slot

    The home cinema system has:

    Speakers (I get those!)
    2 x HDMI in
    1 x HDMI out
    LAN
    2 x optical in
    Antenna
What I assume is component (one column of Yellow, White, Red, on column of Red, Blue, Green)

If that means anything to anyone then would love some pointers!

    Thanks again xxx

The red and white connectors are analogue audio (stereo)
The yellow connector is poor quality video
The Red Green and Blue connectors are your component, which is high quality analogue video.

Ok so the question is whether your home cinema system is capable of converting the HDMI to component out?

Connect the component (Red Green and Blue connectors) of your home cinema to the TV and confirm that it works ok.
Can you connect the HDMI Firestick to the home cinema and see if it will output the video through the component to your TV? If that works you could try the same with your laptop.

Does the VGA connector on your laptop work ok when connected directly to the TV? Or does your laptop only have HDMI?

Can you post the model number of your home cinema?

  • Model number of cinema system is LG

Will give those other things a try - am I connecting the component of home cinema system to component of TV?
Not that bothered about connecting the laptop - it's a work one anyway which they change fairly regularly so probably not worth bothering with - if I can connect the firestick and the cinema system I'll be happy :)
Thanks again (now I just need to remember where everything was pluuged in as I had to disconnect it all to get he TV off the wall...I may be some time...

That's the Make. the model would be something like LG ABC123

Yes, that's the quickest way to get your home cinema picture on the TV. Component cables use RCA jacks but for a good picture you'll want a high quality cable.
