I thought about growing some of this for greens during the winter as its supposed to be easy to grow. Can you just steam it or boil it or does it need a sauce?0

I slice mine and stirfry it with garlic.0

yes and yes.
easy to grow, can be steamed, boiled, stirfried, wilted etc or fancier with a sauce.... tastes like a strongly flavoured spinach...0 -
Thanks all,
Have decided to go for chicken breasts with chard and mushrooms, going to pop in the oven with a tin of condensed chicken soup and topped with cheese....
Will let you know how it turns out later on!!
Thanks again,

Hey everyone,
Just thought I'd report back on how tea turned out...
We are now converted Chard lovers!! It turned out lovely - very tasty and yummy!! Thanks for all your advice, wouldn't have had a clue what to do with it otherwise!
Thanks,

I am growing chard on my allotment and it has done very well and is more slug-resistant than my cabbage. But we've had rather a lot of it! Here are a couple of other recipe ideas that we've tried and liked:
Swiss chard pesto http://www.vegbox-recipes.co.uk/recipes/swiss-chard-recipe-1.php
Swiss chard frittata

For lots and lots of ideas, google recipes for "silverbeet", which is the name used for chard in Australia and New Zealand. It's a lovely vegetable (and very easy to grow, you just pick off the leaves as you want them).
I like it in a lasagne. I do a vege-ful tomatoey sauce, and then stir chopped chard at the end (leafy bits and the stem), then layer it the usual way with pasta and cheese sauce.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -
This is great - Soak overnight 6 oz black-eyed beans (could use other ones!), then boil for 40 minutes in fresh water to cover by 1". Chop up 1 lb of chard, and add with 1 tbsp lemon juice + a little salt + pepper (added 1 leek as well). Simmer for 15 minutes. Saute off 1 onion, finely chopped, 3 cloves grated garlic in a little olive oil, then mix into the beans, drizzle with more lemon juice and olive oil. Serves 4. Would be great with braised meat as well, lamb or mutton or pork.0
