Chop and add to stir fry or use in veg soup.
  • I chop mine up and chuck it in a stew or soup.

Also chopping it up and frying it up in oil and garlic is nice but my kids won't eat it so I don't bother with that anymore. Goes nice with fish. (fry the stalks for five mins before adding the leaves in for a further a 5 mins - think recipe was from Riverford site)

Treat it like any other green leaf! probably best either lightly boiled or steamed until soft and then tossed in pepper and butter (or no butter if health conscious).

    Nothing unhealthy about butter :D

Took delivery of my first veg box today so excited! only thing is I don't know what to do with half of it!! So swiss chard, what can I make with it? I have looked online but can't find anything thats not too 'airy fairy' obviously swiss chard is a bit posh for me Ok so I searched on here and found some ideas I should've come here first, silly me lol!

Younger leaves can be eaten raw in salads
fleshy stalks are usually cooked separately they take longer to soften.

Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • If you search Guardian website for Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and chard then there's a whole page of ideas.

Brilliant recipes. He also does a chard, chickpea and tamarind stew recipe in his veg book - I'm sure there's a link on line. Stems are lovely done as gratin with cream and cheese and parmesan and breadcrumbs on top. Then use the leaves in something like you'd love spinach.

I cook it lightly, chop it finely and put it in a commercially bought short crust pastry case, cover with grated cheese and 2 one 3 beaten eggs to make a savoury quiche.
