in a quandry

Options
hi,
new here... my query is about bad credit history.. i had several credit cards going back several years ago..i had very bad mental health at the time and couldnt keep things sorted, thus i got into debt unwittingly.. the thing is i get letters now offering me to repay.. they are large sums.. but i feel how can i now tell if the sums are correct.. or even what they are for? i dont want to just pay these people with no real understanding of what i'm paying for.. i was keen to find another credit card for bad credit.. as i'm quite desperate... and i am much better now and would do things right.. but i'm thinking i will never get one until paid these previous debts... any help appreciated..

Ask for a breakdown of what they want payment for.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. Make sure if you do get another CC, that it's for the right reason and used correctly, you do not want to get further into debt.

Leaving aside how you came to be in debt, which is not relevant unless perhaps you believe that you were legally incompetent at the time, in which case I suggest you discuss the matter with your doctor first.
You have multiple defaults and are receiving letters from debt collectors.
You are desperate to obtain a new 'bad credit' credit card.
You should not get yourself into debt in order to repay defaulted debt to debt collectors under these circumstances. Any repayment of such debts should come from your savings (if any) or your income according to your means.
    How long is 'several years'?
When did you last communicate with anybody about these debts?
How much do you allegedly owe?
What is the current state of your finances and recent credit history?
