I have a flat facing the Forth of Firth and the winds when they are easterlies, and it's cold most of the year. I, like many, really feel the cold.
So I have thermal blinds on most of the windows and either thermal-backed or thermal lined curtains on all the windows, which get drawn at dusk at this time of the year. I have a thermal backed curtain on both the front and balcony door and they have draught-proof stripping around them. I even have a draught-proof letterbox from Nigel's eco st*re. I also wear thermal undies - they do some pretty ones in the old MnS.
I have two old storage heaters which are a bit temperamental and both the bathroom and kitchen have heated towel rails (same running cost as a light bulb). I have two modern oil filled radiators, which have three settings - 800/1200/2000 and a thermostat. I put mine on 800 only and then on half - so using 400W x 2 an hour. I don't find it works out too expensive and I'm usually plenty warm enough for the extra £1 a day.

Oh I know Lynne the problem is I don't have storage heaters or any kind of central heat at all. The only thing I have is a 2kw convector heater and a 2kw oil radiator. For an entire flat. Running both of those full power costs a combined 52p per hour and it takes a good 8 hours to get the flat warm because it's quite large and those heaters are meant for occasional use in small rooms. Putting them on for an hour does nothing whatever. It doesn't even take the edge off and it's just a waste of 50p. Putting them on half strength would just mean leaving them on 24-7 at a cost of 26p an hour. That might get the living room warm.
(the type of portable heater doesn't matter. 2kw is 2kw however you spin it)
And I have a well insulated modern build flat with double glazing.
My solution is to live underneath a 0.2kw heated throw and to hell with the outside world. (and an electric underblanket on the bed). Having that running costs like 50p for 24 hours. Much more efficient.
ETA: this is my second winter in this flat. Last winter I put the heating on and ended up with an extra £300 on my leccy bill no taAqua 0/1850 Cap.One 0/450 Vanquis 0/500 HSBC 0/100

I won't include it until I receive it as can take upto 28 days to be received.

Big congratulations to everyone who has received cashback, vouchers, refunds or anything else from anywhere recently:j:beer:
So many interesting posts since I last popped in, I love this thread:T
Keep up the fight Aesop, just as I will. After all, it's our money we want back;).
Received £7.28 from Amazon for my last book sale of the year. I've put my inventory on 'holiday setting' for a couple of weeks as am worried that any last-minute buyers might not receive their goods in time for Christmas:(. Gives me a good opportunity to sort out my books and maybe adjust the prices of those languishing unsold for way too long.
Received £3 in Paypal from Pinecone:j. I actually get £4 per survey as one of the earliest members but they've stopped letting us redeem the full £4 at one go now, it has to be £3 or £5!
That's a total of £10.28 since last update. Not sure where any more will be coming from before the year-end though:(
Have a good money-making weekend everyone:beer:0 -

Another one here who feels the cold, Lynne:(. I keep reading that it's a gender thing, women suffer far more than men;)
Thanks for posting the leccy cost link:T. I'll be referring to it all the time now. Brilliant:beer:0
