NHS - Time to privatise?

I t should be kept free at point of use, but all the foreign !!!!!!!!!!s who have abused it must be made to pay, the best way is to not allow entry to the country without proper travel insurance, that includes Europeans. If we get sick in most European countries the ECIH card only covers for initial emergency treatment anything more than that has to be paid for and we should adopt the same policy!
I'm afraid you're completely wrong about that.
The old E111 only covered emergency care but the EHIC covers all necessary treatment (including ongoing care), even if you're abroad for quite a long period. It also covers you on exactly the same basis as a native of that country0 -

It covers someone who is going to another EEA country and will require dialysis and oxygen if I remember correctly, and routine maternity care but does only cover new and pre- existing conditions as an emergency necessity. Some EEA countries that are covered by the card only provide the most basic of care free so some treatments emergency or not are not even covered by the card and some EEA countries don't have state funded healthcare at all so the card wouldn't entitle you to anything.0 -

I think we both said that treatment is covered on the same basis as the nationals in that country, not that care is necessarily completely free. I was also pretty sure that every EEA country had some state funded healthcare but I'm happy to be corrected and learn.:)
However, I do disagree with your point that I've bolded. The NHS website states quite clearly,
"It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return." which is obviously far more than emergency care.

Nothing that has been privatised has ever improved or been to the benefit of the customer, but something needs to be done. Some sort of 'queue jump' where those that could afford it can pay extra to be diagnosed/treated quicker, needs to be some benefit in life to having worked hard and made some money. The extra money could then pay for more nurses and proper 24/7 care. All the !!!!less, brighthouse types and labour voters will probably moan about it not being equal, but then it isn't equal at the moment.0

I think we maybe at cross purposes here missbiggles..... Which maybe my fault...
Immediate/emergency necessary yes, and follow up maybe for a review, but no further treatment in regards to specialist referral for example.0 -
Or your dad knows that he wanted out and gave the nurses the number to call as he didn't want put to another ward and now that there's been issues doesn't want you to kick off in case someone produces a bit of paper with your dads signature to show that he discharged himself against medical advice?
Also the complication would probably have happened regardless of where your dad was.
Your description of him on the previous thread; knows what he wants, likes a fuss made over him, demands people taxi him about, expects you to drop everything and run to him on a whim etc don't paint the picture of a frail old man, more like someone who knows exactly how to manipulate w situation to make his son come running.
Oh hes got a very manipulative streak I will say but only for people like me. BUT hes also got a VERY unhealthy sense of awe when it comes to anyone in authority. Thats just it - he will absolutely no way in a million years cause any "trouble" as he sees it for anyone thats important as he sees but will instead manpulate me to pick up the slack.
No he did not want out definitely. 1000%.
But yes the complication may have happened. Granted. But like I said, if it was something that could not be avoided fair enough but if anyone was in any way negligent thats different. It'll all come out in the wash hopefully.
Surely you can see theres a difference?0 -

Well, that certainly isn't true in France where you can access the whole medical service with your EHIC. (Personal experience.) Perhaps other countries might be more restictive although that seems pretty pointless when the UK is paying for the treatment anyway.0 -
Having read a lot of the OP's threads about his Dad, I agree with GlasweJen.
My Mum is exactly the same, she tells people all sorts of stuff - I'm sure she really believes it happened (or didn't happen) how she says - but we've caught her out several times.
Honestly now he would not argue or disagree with someone like a doctor or nurse. If they said something like you've got to go home, stand on your head for 55 mins out of every hour reciting the lords prayer backwards he'd say OK then.
Then he'd phone me and say you've got to come and help me do this. Then I'd say but Dad thats silly, why didnt you ask them why, the answer would be "well they know what they're doing and I didnt want to cause a fuss" but if you dont want to help me thats fine.
Silly example but we've had real life examples EXACTLY like this in the past with him.0 -
You said he has sight in one eye and they operated on the other ? So is he blind or not ? I would never wait for a phone call from a hospital about someone being discharged, in my experience, things happen on wards which can turn things upside down in seconds. Phoning relatives to come and collect family members won't be something top of their list to be fair. Why did a neighbour collect him, you've avoided answering this so far.
To clarify, he has one good eye which developed a cataract. So they operated on this one.
So how do I know hes being discharged then if they dont phone me? He has a mobile which he refuses to take with him which I could have phoned - another story.
Why his neighbour picked him up? I live 30 miles from hospital. I work another 60 miles further away. This was arranged at short notice - I'm self employed I would lose my contract if I took the day at short notice like this.
I planned to meet him at home late afternoon whilst neighbour collected him.
Fully expect someone will find fault with this though.... There are other issues which I dont feel I have to explain myself here.0
