Going well this month.. £250 from switching over two current accounts and should be selling one of my cars on Thursday! Got an engine to sell soon as well and waiting on another £100 from a third account switch.

Trying to keep upbeat but feeling as though it'll take ages before we can look to get a mortgage. Feel like I should enjoy my money more whilst I'm still young (only 23) but feel bad when it comes to spending out anything reasonable, if I knew what I wanted, knowing that its set aside for a reason.

You're doing really well, Ashers. I bought my first house when I was 23 too, and although it only seems like a couple of years ago, it was actually closer to 20 . I was earning £18K, and I can't remember what I paid for my semi, but Zoopla tells me it was last sold on 23rd Aug 2000 for £65,000 - and I believe that was us selling it. It seems crazy how much more expensive houses are now, and how much you need to save to get a decent deposit.

I think me and my friends were probably one of the last of those ages of friends where everyone was getting onto the property ladder at more or less the same time. We couldn't afford to go to so many gigs, and we mainly socialized round each others houses to save money and went to all the free festivals and V-dub weekends instead of expensive music festivals, but at least we were all comrades in mortgage arms. I think things have changed quite significantly - I don't know how many of your friends are in the same boat as you. That might make a difference.

Don't feel bad about not being able to enjoy money - you've got your priorities right. If you can afford the time to have fun, that's so much better than just being able to afford the dosh.

Its a tough one. I can't see us making moves without a £30k deposit at least in our area to be honest. Around the Saffron Walden, Cambridgeshire/Essex/Suffolk border.

Not to many of our friends are really doing the same. Theres one couple who are but they haven't even really started saving to be honest, or considering the in depth matters of being the 'ideal' applicant for a mortgage.

At the moment I'm the only one doing the saving as my girlfriend isn't earning very much and just scrapping by month to month. I'd like to think I'm in quite a good position for my age which definitely helps when it comes to saving. I'm not one for going out drinking etc. which is a help, but I do have a 2nd car which is my passion and in the past has had a fair bit of money put into it. So that is my main enjoyment in the summer months when its on the road.

Considering booking a small weekend break somewhere for my girlfriends birthday in April though. Nothing lavish.

Just got to keep on saving I guess!

    January update - £700 saved.

£500 to Nationwide RS, and £200 to Halifax HTB ISA.

Okay-ish start, I know as the year goes on I will be able to improve how much I save. :)

February Update so far - £200 saved into HTB ISA.

£500 out this month to pay for skiing holiday end of Feb. (so excited!)

Will have to check balance, and see how much I can transfer over to Nationwide RS. I might be able to stretch to the full £500, if not it'll be nearer £400 or something..

  • Just transferred £150 to my savings account from my pay (this is not going to be used!), with a total (on target) for this month of 700! YAY!

On another note, I'm learning how to drive...I've not taken that many lessons, but it feels like such an outgoing in terms of cost when you're trying to save! Esp. with this redundancy business looming...

Nice to see everyone is making good headway this early in the year!

Well I added up all my commissions plus extra bits saved from this month and my total is £11,204.94 for Feb.

I've added that to my total and will update the spreadsheet. I need to increase my target as it's a bit redundant now, think I will make it £15,000
