Gotta say webuserisme, that your a lot more patient than i would have been. Well done for remaining polite - I just don't see the need for people to be rude when you try to help. Perhaps mse is going the way of some other sites. Thanks for your pointers I've found them very helpful.

Thanks for the support. Both the posters on this thread that have shown themselves in a less than flattering light are now on my ignore list. I can be as 'prickly' as the next person but like to reserve my anger for the things that are worth venting it on, like our soldiers being killed in Iraq and other 'real' stuff. But, like I said earlier, each to their own.

Sanctimonious drama queen! I did think this poster was holding out for effect, but that post was ridiculous.

Anyway. A Google search for either of the "clues" produced nothing. I asked people in the NHS, the Ambulance Service, and so on if they know of any such shops in Central Scotland and none did. Does anyone else know if there really is such a thing, and if they do, could they please supply details to the Money Savings Expert website so it isn't a "secret" any more?

We have a few of these shops in our town but you don't have to join them, they tend to start out as poundshops then start selling food. Like supernoodles, the proper brand are 9p or they do 2lt bottles of pop for 29p

Company Shop (known locally as Marrens) and is situted in Tankersley, just outside Sheffield. Happy now?

Why couldn't you have said that in the first place, without dragging Iraq into it?

Why have we tolerated this post at all?

Surely if some bloke came on here saying, my company is selling laptops really cheap but i'd strongly recommend you ring them before ordering to avoid disappointment, we'd have it removed as spam?

I must be using the wrong sort of google! But thank you very much for uncovering that thread. Unfortunately, although it looks like I'd be able to get a card for it if I worked in that part of the world, there doesn't seem to be anything like it round here. Unless anyone from Central Scotland knows differently?

And it would be good if the Money Saving Expert was to publicise the Sheffield and other services. If nothing else, it would ease my conscience about upsetting webuserisme. :D

Apparently, you can't just leave your post like that in this thread, can we have the full names and postcodes of these shops (a multimap link and phone number would be most welcome also) plus manager's name. Crikey, I also see you haven't even said which town you live in. Tut tut, the 'supermarket overstock shop' police will come down on you like a ton of bricks now. Don't say you haven't been warned.:D

Just to continue the line on this thread: RE: supermarket surplus:

Yes there will be poundland et. al selling cheap noodles and buscuits etc.
These people have done that for years! The only other thing you can sell after that is frozen (non-perishable) foods...

If you go to http://yell.co.uk put in your postcode/town and search for 'feezer centres' you will get a list of discount frozen foods retailers who buy surplus frozen foods from supermarkets and punt them out at extremley low prices.

Amongst the list there may be some people maintaing freezers  (bad listings?)

Two names to look out for are 'Heron Frozen Foods Ltd.' and 'Farm Foods' which tend to run medium sized shops in lower-than-normal demographic neighbourhoods which are full of freezers selling ex-supermarket stock.

They tend to establish themselves in areas where they can make money from people with low incomes. For these reasons (cost base being low) there are no websites about them! (save for a couple of enterprising local managers) and it's not uncommon for them not to set-up on less-than-popular high streets due to rent issues!

This is how http://www.iceland.co.uk started off (although still cheap.. not as cheap as the above no-frills type places!)
    :A
