I know exactly how much energy I have used in previous years and I don't have smart meters (or want them) so I'm looking for a company that wont mess me around.
ThanksAvro used to be very cheap and very good. Website was simple and worked well, phones answered promptly and you could switch to one of the new cheaper tariffs instantly. Sadly, something seems to have gone very wrong in recent months and there are many complaints now, not just on geeky forums.Best give them a miss for the time being if you want a hassle-free life. That said, wholesale prices are rocketing and it seems that many smaller companies are having a tough time and have cut costs by economising on customer service, so others may be as bad or even worse. Not so long ago Outfox the Market were rated dire and Avro were good, but now the rankings seem to be the opposite. The big boys such as nPower/E.On/E.On Next, SSE, Scottish Power, British Gas aren't necessarily any better, so it can be pot luck.1 -
No surprises if it is horses for courses and trade-offs. Re rocketing (wholesale) prices it is probably more important to lock in to a fixed tariff ASAP than to agonize over the choice of supplier.
Re the latter the choice IMHO is basically between a small provider on the one hand, that will probably have below average prices but whose customer service is not up to par [I accept that this is may be an unfair generalisation).. Higher risk of hassle. Higher risk of defaulting. . Forumites' recent reports of Avro on this forum are indicative in this respect.
Or go to the other extreme and opt for one of the larger suppliers listed by Gerry1 but unfortunately size is no guarantor of service level. These are in general likely to be less price competitive.
Case in point Octopus is a bit of a mixed bag. Large and generally well organized though they have been suffering from rapid growth pains recently. Their main tariffs are now not the most competitive. However if you are prepared to do some homework the so called innovative tariffs are hard to beat. But to enjoy these, smart meters are necessary which aren't necessarily everyone's cup of tea. Smart meters are not required for Octopus' other tariffs.
So Energy is worth looking at at least for gas.(with or without smart meters)
In the end it is a case of evaluating the search engines and relying on pot luck!Telegraph Sam

Gas unit rate for here in the NE at least = 3.2 p / kWh. S/C is the same @ 26.6.. Tariff is Cherry fixed. Not a laughing matter ..Telegraph Sam

I am a new single fuel customer and the above deal is what they offered me (12 months fixed with £5 exit fee). Has Cinnamon just replaced Cherry perhaps?Telegraph Sam

Explanation: Cherry is a fixed rate tariff which is still current, but along with all SO fixed rate tariffs now closed to new applicants. This rather destroys the case for switching to it.
I have not "searched" to see who is offering fixed gas tariffs. Octopus used to but are now only offering gas + electric combined by the look of it. But no exit fee makes this worth considering.Telegraph Sam
