OP you seem to be under some confusion when it comes to VAT and the term "business".
The term business does not necessarily mean that its a company. Sole traders for example can be required to register for VAT if their turnover exceeds the limit. They're still a business even if they're not a company.
Being VAT registered does not mean you can reclaim any and all VAT you pay. Only the VAT on business purchases (and if a purchase is partly used for business and partly for personal, then you can only reclaim part of the VAT). Anyone who claims VAT on personal purchases is a fool imo as that type of vat fraud (VAT evasion) is the most common type and most likely to be picked up on by HMRC.
Also your original statement of:I know that it is illegal to refuse to supply a receipt or a VAT receipt on request,
Is slightly misleading also. The only time a receipt can be demanded is where both parties are vat registered (which means the only time it can be demanded is some b2b sales and cannot be demanded in a b2c sale). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
You are wrong. As I am a VAT taxable person, they must supply one (they know I am registered for VAT), nothing to do with b2b or b2c
And following from that, the transaction between Argos and you was definitely a business to business sale.0 -
I bought some TVs online using the Argos FastTrack Service. The store I collected them from refused to give me a receipt as I paid for them online.
I called customer Services who promised me a receipt, that never arrived, I called again, I was promised again, receipt never arrived, called again, I was told they would email it, email arrives refusing to give a receipt as they don't have a billing address. Emailed back a billing address (that they already had on file with the order), no receipt. Called today, customer Services confirmed they always had my address, said a receipt can't be emailed but I now have to wait 7 days to get one in the post (a promise I heard before).
I know that it is illegal to refuse to supply a receipt or a VAT receipt on request, why don't Argos just comply with the law and how can I get it enforced against them?
Report them to HMRC0 -
Argos make obtaining a vat receipt impossible - The time I have spent on the phone and emailing various people isn't worth the effort of the savings I may have made - I won't be buying anymore business items again from Argos - crazy in this day and age !!!! 😜0

Try calling them and asking for their VAT Reg Number - at least you can write that on your online purchase confirmation email printout so you've something to show the VAT man when he comes.0

This is very good advice IMO.
The company I work for just inserts the standard receipt into the records if we can't get a VAT receipt (it's an issue as we have lots of outlets and they sometimes procure small items at retailers such as Argos). It's not ideal but neither our accountants nor HMRC have ever queried it. Perhaps a tax inspector can comment but I don't think there will be a huge issue in just substituting what receipt you have after making reasonable attempts to get the appropriate receipt.
