Argos wont give me a receipt or VAT receipt

I bought some TVs online using the Argos FastTrack Service. The store I collected them from refused to give me a receipt as I paid for them online.

I called customer Services who promised me a receipt, that never arrived, I called again, I was promised again, receipt never arrived, called again, I was told they would email it, email arrives refusing to give a receipt as they don't have a billing address. Emailed back a billing address (that they already had on file with the order), no receipt. Called today, customer Services confirmed they always had my address, said a receipt can't be emailed but I now have to wait 7 days to get one in the post (a promise I heard before).

I know that it is illegal to refuse to supply a receipt or a VAT receipt on request, why don't Argos just comply with the law and how can I get it enforced against them?

Do you have a confirmation of the order as proof of purchase? Unless you are intending to claim the VAT back a VAT receipt is not required and so long as they are willing to accept the confirmation email as proof of purchase I can't see the big deal.

They've said you'll receive one within seven days via the post. That's going to be quicker than any enforcement action you might take.

A VAT receipt must be supplied from a VAT registered company, and yes you do need a proper VAT receipt if you want to claim back the VAT.

It seems however they are sending one within 7 days so what's the problem?

They have said numerous times before it is coming in 14 days or 7 days. I need to reclaim the VAT
  • Ok so start a paper trail the website says:
    Are receipts sent with deliveries?
No your order number is printed on the address label on the parcel and your order number is all you need to know if you wish to return goods to us.
    How can I get a V.A.T. receipt?
We can send you a V.A.T. receipt for the product(s) you have purchased. In order to receive such a receipt, please Email customer services, including your order number and we'll be more than happy to deal with your request.

So send them an email so you have something on record. Then await the time they say and go from there.
  • Sounds like a mountain out of a mole hill. I'm pretty sure they will issue one.

I already did all of this on the first request

a VAT invoice is only required for sales between vat registered entities (so b2b).

As Argos is mainly a b2c seller there is no issue in them not issuing vat invoices as standard.

You are wrong. As I am a VAT taxable person, they must supply one (they know I am registered for VAT), nothing to do with b2b or b2c

You seem to be deliberately setting out to find fault with everything that is said to you, even if there is no fault. As cono clearly pointed out to you, they will supply a VAT receipt if you ask for one, but because their primary business is B2C there is no requirement for them to supply a VAT receipt as standard. If you're not happy with the way Argos have handled your request make a complaint.
