BIN or Make an offer

They offered a BIN and I agreed a sale, they did not need to put in a bid at that point. I assume the amp in question was no longer available for sale hence the offer.

    That makes sense then.
Another one was for a PS2, with around 150 games, wireless pads and even a keyboard (never did work out why a PS2 would have a keyboard). I had a BIN offer for the asking price, that they lived around the corner and could pick it up that day. I relented and let them have it for the price, suspecting I might not get the asking price in the bidding as PS2s were pretty much redundant at the time.

The PS2 had a keyboard for online gaming. You could send messages.

Ah right. Yeah, the PS2 dropped in price then came back up again and has been around the same for a while now. PS2 games jump around in value quite a bit aside from a few worthless ones and a few rare ones.
I never put items on a BIN offer, I only sell the item for a specific price and await the bidding, sometimes I get less as a result. But do make a point of only taking BIN offers that are either slightly over or the precise sale price.

I see. I did used to mostly do auctions but I find BINs best now, especially with the most recent offers from ebay.
  • My pet peeve is completed listings: no matter what price you sell something for, it will always gravitate or receive offers very close to the average price.

This feature alone should be removed to create mystery and chance of a surprise profit for would be traders.

You are never going to win long term with ebay if you buy on there and sell there - the 10% fees is more than enough to destroy any profit as that will still keep the sold price to within that range.

Having said that, buying stuff to KEEP on ebay is great ONLY IF THE ITEM IS UNAVAILABLE ELSEWHERE.

I use completed listings as a seller to see what things have recently sold for or gone unsold at, especially if none are currently listed.

Don't tend to use it as a buyer or to price up anything I wish to buy. I find it quite useful though.

Buying and selling shouldn't be about mystery. Can't hide the prices elsewhere though so wouldn't change the offers people send, you're just likely to get less offers from those who haven't thought to look elsewhere to price things up and so don't know what to offer and from those who do look elsewhere and then buy elsewhere.

That's clearly not the case for many, only for those who don't account for the fees and postage costs and that's their fault not ebays. Other sites charge as much if not more.

It's good for that, but not only that.

If you put something on auction with a 99p start confident it will reach £20, and it does, do you feel it is cheeky of the people who bid £1, £2 or even £10? Or even block the bidders? Probably never crossed your mind. Why do some sellers think best offer should be so different? If you don't want to see lower offers just set up an automatic reject.

I never ever start auctions at a £0.99, it's just not worth the gamble. But what I do is set the minimum price that I'm happy to accept and use it as a starting price, if the item sells at a starting price or anything higher than, then great, if it doesn't, then I'll just keep re-listing it until it sells. This is where BIN listings come in handier, you just 'put it out there', so that buyers can make you a 'reasonable' offer or just accept asking price, without having to wait until the end of the auction to find out whether they've won the item or they have to go hunting again.

However, what buyers don't do, is chance their luck by asking 'please cancel last 5 bids that took your item up to £20, as I want to pay only £10 for that item. So if I was to list the exact same item at £20, why would I accept an offer of £10 on it?

Actually some buyers do offer lower than what the current bid is.

Either they're really stupid or they're hoping the sellers are lol.

Was Soolin not talking about that recently? so there you go, they even try and do that as well!

Yeah, I think so. Certainly been mentioned quite recently and previously on here.

Ebay is filled with hundreds of thousands of people and each person thinks differently (and some barely think at all lol). So while most may think "no one would ever do that!" someone out there will have done it or be thinking about doing it.

That's why we get cheeky offers, people over-paying, people buying boxes and being surprised with the listing states box only (and similar issues), chancers, scammers and so on. Just got to remember that none of it's personal and to stay away from walls when dealing with idiots :wall: ;)

    :D

Very true. I've had a few debates recently where someone strongly disagrees with me but at least one person always comes by and agrees with me at some point. Although I do wonder what some people are like in real life when online they appear to have no morals or jump straight to insults (usually when proven wrong lol). Also often wonder how an Earth I actually ended up in such a debate in the first place :rotfl:

The internet is a strange place.
