Why do I feel PETTY when shops overcharge me?

So today I was overcharged by 90p in total, across three items.

I never used to complain for the odd 10/20p, but in these times I've been a lot more on the ball with my receipts.

However in requesting the money back I just feel realllllly petty and an inconvenience, when I know I shouldn't, as it's the principal right?

But for some reason I feel so bad, especially when the sales assistants tut and roll their eyes. Although I can image in refunding such small amounts is somewhat a waste of time/energy and paper for them.

Anyone else?

Well how do you reply to them or approach the mistake?

I can't see someone would tut and roll their eyes when you just politely point out you've been miss charged. Because in my 4 decades of being a consumer I've never had this problem.

I'm just guessing here. But I wouldn't mind betting that you don't say anything if you are undercharged.
Then, I can't remember when was the last time I was overcharged.
I probably wouldn't notice and even if I did, life is too short for that sort of nonsense over a couple of pence.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

90p is rather more than a couple of pence though.

I always check my receipts before I leave a supermarket and, on the rare occasion I find an overcharge (never found an undercharge) I've just popped back to the assistant and say I think there might have been an error. They are always apologetic and correct the error immediately.

This is why I use self service checkouts! I check as I'm scanning, if it's at a regular checkout I may be too distracted to look at the price as I'll be packing

Perhaps you don't like face to face confrontation?

For tutting and rolling their eyes, try and obtaining a refund from Morrisons after they have overcharged you.

I would have been overcharged twice in one week, at Tesco, if I hadn't been using self-checkout.

In each case the product special offer was not on the system :

2 trays of Butcher's dog food came up as £12, instead of £10
2 extra large pineapples came up as £3, instead of £2.50.

Also, oranges should have been two packs for £2.50, but came out full price. This was because the shelf label was incorrect (for packs of 'up to 4', but there were only boxes of 'up to 5' packs ).

    No.
I check my receipts & change meticulously.
And if it's wrong, I say so.
I've never had 'tutting' or 'eye-rolling

I'm not sure what undercharging has to do with the original post but I would generally point out if I was given too much change.
Life's not too short to ensure you pay the right price for something.

the tutting I assume is due to the amounts being soooooo small. It's not like £5 or anything. plus when you think about it, you're joining a queue to argue/request 10p or whatever...

I actually expect it in supermarkets as I'm sure they find it a bit hard to keep tabs on every single item, every single day. things slip. never had any major issues there though, they refund with no issues.

Superdrug are pretty terrible with their offers on cosmetics 'not being recognised' and it's a massive headache to sort out as their tills just say 'no' to manager overrides.

it's more the smaller shops or the ones where you can't see the item price being scanned...
  • I always think how long has it took me yo earn that money. As ultimately it's mine and shops should be better at keeping track of offers. I mainly shop at lidl now to be honest as I got fed up with stuff like this getting overcharged as if places can't be viligant with charging right what else can't they be bothered with
    :T:T :beer: :beer::beer::beer: to the lil one :) :beer::beer::beer:
