Why do I feel PETTY when shops overcharge me?

I mainly shop at lidl now to be honest as I got fed up with stuff like this getting overcharged as if places can't be viligant with charging right what else can't they be bothered with
Yes, I go along those lines too...
90p is, in a minimum wage job, earned within 8 minutes. Not counting tax, of course, which may bump it up to 9 minutes if included.
I suppose I differ from you in that 90p is not the end of the world, and the energy I expend probably costs more than 90p in the long run! Very occasionally I'll have a pop, but more often than not it's just like whatever.
This situation VERY RARELY happens, though, and only really seems to occur on the discounted items. Like the reduced chicken I bought a week ago... reduced from £3 to £2.90 but which scanned at £3. Nope, not going to happen! You can keep my silver 10p mate! I do not give a flying about that...
My corner shop was notorious... he'd very occasionally chuck on an extra quid or two onto the bill. Caught him out once or twice. You don't mess with a maths geek, but alas sometimes I'm just on autopilot and don't notice the amount. I'm one of these sad gits who calculates the total cost *just for fun* but I give up to 10% leeway on the final bill usually. That git used to charge me like £8 for a £6 bill, or £5 for £4 etc. Really dodgy stuff which you had to be on the ball to clock.0 -
If this is the attitude of the staff then they should be reprimanded and retrained.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

If anyone tutted or rolled their eyes at me when I was asking to be charged the right price. they'd get told pdq to alter their attitude.
I can't believe how many people seem to accept being overcharged so nonchalently.0 -
I agree with this.

Absolutely right.I can't believe how many people seem to accept being overcharged so nonchalently.
I don't so much mind people not bothering about being overcharged by a small amount, I sometimes let it go myself (not that it happens often).
However, I do find the holier than thou attitude of those who are snarky about people who do somewhat offensive. My attitude is that it's my money, and I'll decide what to do about it. I may be prepared to 'give up' certain sums of money via DD's to various charities but that does not mean that I'll necessarily allow random shopkeepers (as someone mentioned earlier, usually supermarkets and their offers) to dip their hands in my pocket. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

My comments were merely an observation on other posters' attitudes to over-charging.
Is that allowed on here?
Personally, I don't give a toss whether people challenge either attitudes of sales assistants or the fact they've been over-charged - just making an observation that I'm surprised that some people don't find it an issue.
As you say:it's my money, and I'll decide what to do about it.0 -
No, not at all. I wasn't talking about you. If you look at what I wrote after that comment you'll see I was completely in agreement with your sentiment.Personally, I don't give a toss whether people challenge either attitudes of sales assistants or the fact they've been over-charged - just making an observation that I'm surprised that some people don't find it an issue.
And, I completely agree. Which is why I thanked your post as useful! There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Could there be an element of the customer's approach that results in eye-rolling and tuttting? I've never been on the end of such a response.
"Would you be kind enough to check the price please" is better than "You've made a mistake".0 -

Yes your experience is pretty similar to that of mine which is why I posted a very similar reply.0 -
I got 2 bottles of eye drops at Superdrugs and the shelf price was £3.99 each. Got to the checkout and the assistant said 'That's 78p. Oh no. you've got a multi buy so thats 20p off so it's 58p' So I asked if I could buy some more at that price and she said 'Yes, you can have as many as you like. I can't change the price on the till' So I got another six! Now my dilemma is: Do I complain to Superdrug that I have been undercharged and offer to pay the correct price or do I go back and get some more!!!0

I got into a bizarre confrontation with a little old lady in her corner shop a couple of years ago. It was not a shop I'd used before - I was just passing and went in to buy a pack of cigarettes.
I gave her a tenner and should have got some coins in change, but she gave me a fiver as well as the correct coins. I told that she'd made a mistake and tried to hand her the fiver back but she got all defensive and argumentative assuming that I was complaining of being short changed. She either wouldn't listen to what I was saying or couldn't understand. This went on for 3 or 4 minutes before I gave up and walked out a fiver better off than I should have been!0
