DVLA flawed Sysem

I was given a motor vehicle by my son, I registered it in my name and parked it on private land awaiting repair, I attempted to put it on SORN online but it said that the vehicle was taxed until 01st Jan 2016 so I left it at that, next thing i have a fine through door for failure to insure, but the law states that a vehicle does not have to be insured if it is not used on a public road, and it is put on SORN, So I wrote to the DVLA and explained that I could not put it on SORN as it is taxed, they have made date mistakes on my sons and my V5s also, how do I stand on this regards, Don

Once you registered it in your name then the VED would of been refunded and then its un-taxed. You should of used the reference number on the new keepers green section, not the number of the main document.

Did you not know the law of the land?
  • Don - have you attempted to SORN the vehicle since you received the letter from the DVLA about failure to insure??

So in fact you did not SORN it? Just because a vehicle is taxed does not stop it from being SORN'd, putting it on SORN would result in the remaining tax being refunded.

Therefore it has to be insured, looks bang to rights to me.

  • They sent me the first letter on the 05th Oct 15 and after several letters to them it is still on their website today as taxed until 01st Jan 2016 regards, Don
  • Nothing was refunded, its one big con, what they say and do is another thing regards, Don
  • The dates on the V5s are also incorrect

I sent the V5C off when I sold my car earlier this year and the cheque for the tax refund arrived within a week.

A cheque gets sent to the registered keepers address if you send the V5C off.

So you got reminded that the vehicle was not insured and not SORN and all you did was write a letter.

ALL you needed to do is use the reference number on the New Keepers green section to SORN the car.

    Nothing has changed.
