I was given a motor vehicle by my son, I registered it in my name

How did you register it in your name?

Have you the V5C in your name, dated after your son gave you the vehicle?
  • it has been in my name since 26.08.15 but even today if I try and put it on Sorn it wont let me
Tell us you’re taking your vehicle off the road
    Unable to use service
Unfortunately you cannot use this service yet as the previous keeper of the vehicle has not told DVLA that you are the new keeper. that's all it says every time, they are morons

    You should either:
Wait until you receive the V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) in your name, and then use the reference number from it to make a SORN online
or complete the forms V890 (make a Statutory Off Road Notification), V62 (application for a vehicle registration certificate) and send with your V5C/2 to DVLA Swansea
  • I have two V5s in my name where they messed up the dates and both have different ref numbers

So have you considered filling in V890/V62?

What did your son do with the remaining part of the V5C after he gave you the V5Cpart2?
  • in your case maybe, but not when my father in law died or in this case, I have two V5s in my name where they messed up the dates, my son has not been refunded!

Just a tip - when you're replying to a particular post, it's helpful if you use the 'QUOTE' button under the post to include it in your reply - that will help ensure you get the best advice and makes the thread easier to follow.

As the new keeper, you need to use the details from the green 'New Keeper Supplement' part of your son's original V5C, not from a different V5C.

Did you both complete the relevant parts of page 2 of the original V5C? Did your son send it to the DVLA? If he did, has he received their acknowledgement letter?

Just complete a V890 form and back date it to when it changed keepers.
