No, it isn't the *main* way. If it were, I would go to another bank with my £20K.
Re the electoral roll, I don't know. I think it's the open version that they use for checking ID when you apply online. Personally, I don't think that any of the following information is or has to be a secret:
    Name
    DOB
    Address

Any security system that heavily relies on them is fundamentally flawed.

Yes I had my card frozen when I spent £400 and they could not contact me to confirm it as a genuine transaction.

May I know your bank and I will bank with them! Haha, it seems they are better

I guess it was the same Santander.

Well I don't know about you, but my DOB cannot be found by googling. Or by buying the Electoral Roll as I have opted out years ago (and think the default should be that people are opted out). Nor are my CRA files accessible via Google. I have provided my passport to many organisations as proof of ID but that hasn't led to my DOB, or my name, or any other personal data, being available via Google.

Yes. But it might be the black market sold your personal information. I checked my credit report and it gave me an alert that my email address and password have been sold by the black market. I am not sure whether it has connections with this issue or not.

Yes, I guess they made an automated call to the changed telephone number asking to confirm that the transactions were genuine.

Hi, Grumbler. I think you are right. I remembered I have been shopping in Bicester village with my Natwest debit card. a few days later, Natwest send me a text to confirm. They just list several transactions and say if you can confirm, text back 'yes'. I text back yes. then everything is fine. So if the thieves changed the telephone number and then the confirmation is easy.

Yes. But when I called any company or bank, the first security question will be my date of birth, which is not a secret at all.

So what's the second question you normally get asked by any Company or bank?

If that's the case, it seems you have a gigantic problem. I suppose you did at least change your email address and password immediately (after verifying you have no viruses and malware on your PC), and have also taken other steps to protect yourself from further ID fraud (register with CIFAS etc).

If you want to see your money again, it might be prudent to 'forget' to tell Santander that you are aware that your details have been sold.

I had no idea a credit report would have that kind of info.

I wonder how they find out.

    Nah,
The credit reference agencies have privileged access to the full electoral roll.
I've been off the open version for as long as the facility to opt out was introduced in the early 2000's.
My credit report however correctly reports me as existing at this address continuously.
