A smashing teacher on this forum uses it as a resource in Maths.
Apart from the problems peeling infant fingers back off the volumes at the end of Maths, I think it's a Brilliant way of getting folks to grasp numbers!

I used to go through gardening catalogues, hack out the prettiest flowers (in my infant opinion) and glue them onto folders. I could always find my ringbinder...

Is Argos still going or does everyone buy from Amazon now?

    Still going?
    Really?
    Where do you live?
  • Back in the mid 90's my two kids used to think the Argos catalogue was a giant multiple choice Xmas list and it would get handed back with post it notes and BIG RED ARROWS. If they could have supplied us with speadsheets and flowcharts they would have done. I.E if Nan will spend more than £20 etc.,

My son's life was turned around by leafing through a La Redoute catalogue :) think Littlewoods but with a certain French style !
Lego lost it's appeal after that....
  • Now this was a rare example of my brother and I actually receiving the big ticket item we'd asked for. Sadly, it turned out to be rubbish and gave our parents ammunition for refusing every other expensive toy that looked cool in the advert. It was really badly designed and extremely hard to turn the handle to crush the ice (too hard for a child, Dad had to do it). The flavours you poured over the ice ran out very quickly, and it never tasted that great with cheapo orange squash.

That makes me feel better actually. Thanks Jelly :D

I had a pair of these! The straps were red on mine. My brother used to laugh and call me "Baby-Skates" when I wore them; there was a doll called that being advertised at the time - you pressed a button and she roller-skated around (sort of).

    Roller Discos were brilliant!

I remember when we were making lists for Father Christmas the Argos catalog would come out! And we'd go through and pick a few things we wanted (always with the catalog number :rotfl: had to help him out didn't we? :p )

  • Love it !

Just flicked though 1973 and 1984 and recognised loads of items.

How style has changed....and prices !!

My Mum had a Marshall Ward catalogue and I spent hours looking through and wishing I could afford the toys and clothes.

And yes, the mens underwear was studied too :rotfl:

My Mom used to do Grattans, Kays and later on Janet Fraser. Could never wait for the Autumn/Winter catalogue to come out, so I could look at the toy section and Christmas stuff to my hearts content!

I also remember INDEX. They also had a catalogue, and a shop. They closed down in 2005. It was very similar to Argos, so one or the other had to go I think. And it was Index. It was owned by Littlewoods. Remember them? :)

I used to work for them! Hours of fun when customers would buy stuff from Argos, bring it in to us for a refund then throw a temper tantrum when we pointed out that the number on the side of the box was an Argos stock number. Most surreal moment was explaining to a trio of ghurkhas what a ceramic hob cover was....
