But with a skylake cpu you will need a compatible motherboard and DDR4, which would be more expensive compared to haswell, and not really needed for basic use

Fair point but if doing a full system refresh, I'd personally spend a little extra to bring it up to the latest spec as somewhere down the line you may regret a missing feature, for example the HD530 is full DX12 as the HD4400 is not. Horses for courses and budget for budgets.

One thing I must say to the OP is that if you are sticking with an IGP solution as you requested then make sure you buy dual channel memory, eg 2x4gb rather than 1x8gb as the extra memory bandwidth increases the IGP performance as it shares the same system RAM.

Your current MB supports two DIMM DDR3 800/1066/1333*(OC) DRAM, I suspect you probably have 1066 or even possibly 800 ram installed, if you reuse this memory it will severely impact on the performance of your next system, especially the IGP.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

will this new ram enable him to burn dvd's any better?

Ram installed is DDR 3 1066 2 x 4 gb, new ram was part of the upgrade, just needed some advice on system, AMD or Intel, AMD is a fair bit cheaper from what i see, but the more i look the more confusing it gets.
  • cheap for a reason , once you have tried , you try to forget and buy intel next time

There might be some set-up issues with your current system that is hampering performance, for example make sure that the SSD and HDD are set to use AHCI mode as opposed to IDE, note: check this and do not initiate it as your system will not boot until you activate AHCI in W7

Do you have the latest BIOS installed ?

I think your motherboard is this (typo?) as I can find no reference to the MB stated

    http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/G41M-P28.html#hero-overview

However if it is your wish to upgrade the system*, then my personal advice would be to use Intel CPUs as they have much better performance per watt. Ask yourself the question what is exactly your budget (£170 or £250) and then people can make recommendations for you.

*newer hardware will be better supported with respect to windows 10 should you chose to take the W10 offer up, just ask Gun Jack and his old hardware fun with sound drivers on W10.
