I've picked up 'click & collect' orders from both Debenhams & BHS in the last week and the Debenhams one came in a sealed plastic bag with no handle and the BHS one (larger & heavier) came in a sealed plastic bag with a handle.
No charge for either bag.
Does the legislation cover all provision of plastic bags or just in-store purchases?Did you check the receipt to see if they charged for it?
If they didn't and they get caught then it's as much as £35,000 fine.
Can't see they'll keep giving out free bags for to long seeing the consequences.
Click and collect is specifically excluded from the mandatory charge.0 -
It's funny how people are still make a fuss about this. I have a large shopping retailer local to me that have always charged for bags as long as I can remember. 5p for a small one and 10p for a big one.
People seem to forget that bags actually cost money to produce and cost the retailers money to buy. Even if retailers charge 10p for a bag I bet it's still the least profitable item in the shop!0 -

Nice free paper carrier from Monsoon yesterday. Shame it was raining.... I spotted the bag starting to disintegrate just in time to catch my expensive new purchase before it fell on the ground.0

I'm more than happy to pay for a plastic carrier bag and I completely agree with the reasons for the charge.
I do think that it's a bit of a rip-off though, charging for a tiny bag in which to put a gift card/birthday card. They may well have handles but they can hardly be reused for other shopping, apart from being too small, they're very flimsy.
Thanks for the heads-up though, I'm going Christmas card shopping at Card Factory later this week, I'll take a supply of sandwich bags with me lol!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -

If the card is already cellophane wrapped - you don't need a bag, you can slip it into a coat pocket or a handbag or anything else you may already be carrying with the receipt folded round it. Otherwise, a paper bag would do the job 99.9% of the time wouldn't it?I need to think of something new here...0 -

The problem with Card Factory is that the majority of their cards aren't in cellophane so you do need something to put them in. When I went in I didn't end up buying the cards I'd chosen because I had nothing to put them in - my handbag is too small to put them in fully and I had two jute bags which were overfilled with shopping so they'd have been creased by the time I got home.0 -

I would of happily bought a bag, rather than have to make another trip.0
