Debenhams 10p Plastic Bags

Options
1st ever post so pardon me if its in the wrong place.
I purchased a Long Winter Coat for my wife in Debenhams. At the checkout, the assistant asked me if I needed a bag to which I agreed to buy. The assistant then informed me that the plastic bag cost was 10p. I asked if this was correct as I thought it was 5p.
The reply was that as it was a large plastic bag, the fee was 10p.

Don't know but a lot of shops and products that target women charge a premium as I think women are generally bigger spenders in society and fall in love with products, note how many clothes shops in shopping centres and the size of the men's and women's sections, note how even music that actually sells and charts is aimed at women who are probably less inclined to pirate

5p is the minimum cost. They can charge what they like.

5p is the (minimum) charge for the Single Use Carrier Bags but I doubt that a bag from a store like Debenhams, big enough for your purchase, would be classed as an SUCB anyway.

Based on my assumptions, I would say yes, to both parts of your question.

    It is allowed.
It is greed (taking advantage of government legislation as an excuse to charge for something they previously issued free, usually if you did not even ask for one)

Primark are the only English high street retailers I can think of that don't charge- and that is because they still use paper bags. However, if that is the only place you can buy clothes due to not wanting to take your own bag or buy one, then avoid Scotland- as Primark do charge 5p there even for a paper bag.

Also in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland they charge 5p for their paper bags. Just wait they will start charging in England.

We are charged 5p in Debenhams no matter what size the plastic bag.

A retailer in Scotland is required by law to charge for a paper bag.

Legislation was passed by Scottish Parliament, on 20th October 2014, that requires ALL retailers (food and non-food) to charge a minimum of 5p for each new single-use carrier bag (including paper, those made from some plant based materials and plastic). The aim is to encourage bag re-use and reduce the visible impact of litter.

Paper bags are also charged for in Wales and it's quite common for shops to have different sized bags at different prices

Given its the law that they must charge you must not shop very often
