1st ever post so pardon me if its in the wrong place.
I purchased a Long Winter Coat for my wife in Debenhams. At the checkout, the assistant asked me if I needed a bag to which I agreed to buy. The assistant then informed me that the plastic bag cost was 10p. I asked if this was correct as I thought it was 5p.
The reply was that as it was a large plastic bag, the fee was 10p.

I picked up a 'click & collect' item from Debenhams last week and they didn't charge me for the bag.

But - whilst I was waiitng for the assistant to find my order, I noticed a sign on the desk that said about charging for bags.
I think it might have said it's the law to charge for paper bags (as well as for plastic bags) - which apparently it isn't.
TBH, I didn't take that much notice but it stuck in my mind.
I think I'll have to go back and check to see the actual wording.
It'll probably cost me more than 5p though 'cos I'm bound to find something I want.
But I will have my own plastic bag to put my purchase in. :rotfl:

That's not my experience, I have picked up orders from M&S and they are already in a sealed bagged with a handle.

Did you check the receipt to see if they charged for it?

If they didn't and they get caught then it's as much as £35,000 fine.

Can't see they'll keep giving out free bags for to long seeing the consequences.

I've picked up 'click & collect' orders from both Debenhams & BHS in the last week and the Debenhams one came in a sealed plastic bag with no handle and the BHS one (larger & heavier) came in a sealed plastic bag with a handle.

    No charge for either bag.

Does the legislation cover all provision of plastic bags or just in-store purchases?
  • I was surprised when, having bought a gift card in Next, they tried to charge me for a small bag to stop the card getting damaged in my carrier.

I hadn't prepared for this as I thought they would be the same as the small vegetable bags in supermarkets.

I will make some mini bags next time I go to my craft group.

Some items come in boxes, not bags.

Why didn't you just wear the long winter coat you had bought your wide? much less hassle than paying for a bag...
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I have a slightly creepy image of a bloke the size of Jack Reacher (not that one, the real one :rotfl:) - 6'5" tall, 220-250 lbs, 50" chest wearing a size 8 petite ladies coat.

I went into Card Factory last week and although I understand the law on charging for bags I thought they had a bit of a cheek charging 5p for a small very thin plastic bag. I wouldn't have had a problem paying for one I could keep in my bag and re-use for cards but whereas the supermarkets have improved the quality of their 5p bags Card Factory haven't and are charging 5p for the almost transparent ones which they were giving out for free previously, the kind which tear if you catch them with the corner of the card.

Then its the same price if you get a bag to contain helium filled number balloons. Which is a massive bag.

If CF remove the handle of the small bags, then it will be free
