Upgrading to Sky+ on the cheap

Options
Hi

Does anyone know if I can upgrade my sky package to get a sky plus box, without paying the £99 box price and £30 set up fee??

I'm not on a fixed contract, so I suppose I could phone them and say i'll leave unless they upgrade me.. but would that work?!

Has anybody else done the same thing? I've been a loyal sky customer for about 15 years, so the least they could do is give me a free box!

Thanks for any help and or advice

I have heard they will drop the price of the box to 50 quid in certain circumstances ("I am leaving Sky" sort of statements) Not sure if they will do the install for free.

I personally got a quad LNB for £9.99 off ebay and bought the CT100 cable, clips, self amalgamating tape and terminations from a local electrical wholesaler for £20 quid and did the install myself, I intend to wire locations in other rooms as well when I get around to it.

The skyplus box was donated to me by my brother after he upgraded to sky HD.

I must say how impressed I am with skyplus - it works very well indeed.

if you try to cancel they generally come up with some kind of deal

my parents were quoted over £200 to swap from regular to plus back in the day - after reading the sky+ forum on digital spy i told them to ring and say they wanted to cancel and they got the £50 offer

  • I've heard that the cheap boxes are refurbished ones rather than brand new. Can anyone confirm whether that's true or not?

  • My father in law to be got his about 2 weeks ago and was very chuffed to have paid £100 total cost for it. However his mate at work bragged he had "done a deal" and not paid a penny as he rang up and cancelled stating Virgins was free(as was mine) so when FIL rang sky up he said they could have their box back and cancell his subscription as he has been with them 10 years and been offered zip yet his mate at work was bragging that he got his free and bla bla bla. Anyway after 5 mins of talking they refunded the cost back to his card so he ended up with it free anyway so he is even more chuffed now his mate bragged otherwise he wouldn't of rang them up :D

We cancelled, then got messed about by VM during the install of cable and when we called Sky to see if there was anything we could do about cancelling the cancelation we actually talked them into installing Sky+ for nothing lol

Just done it too! Phoned up and said I was looking at moving to BT Vision and they said there was a special offer tonight of £49 including installation :-). Saved me £110 off the web price (and even more from my local TV shop!)

    Thanks for the tip
