So the government intends to spy on us all - logging every single website that we access

Do they not know of the simple task of changing your IP address to hide your true identity and location ?
I am sure that any IS sympathizers will know how to do this ...

Well given that your ISP gives you your IP address and while with some you can change it to another one 'on demand' that your ISP also gives you I'm interested in how changing your IP address is going to do anything.
.....Seeing as your ISP is going to be monitoring and linking your IP address it gives to to your account in future and keeping a record of all website loaded from the various IP addresses that they allocate to your line.

Now if you are going to start on VPN's - that's a different matter - except that they will also be keeping logs.......

As above, your IP is allocated to you by your ISP. All public network activity will use that IP address. The only thing you can do is communicate over that IP using encryption.

I bet a lot of people are going to switch to using Tor for their general browsing now.

Tor encrypts traffic, passing it through several proxy nodes to obfuscate its origin. A website you access with Tor will see the request as coming from the IP address of a Tor node. But you haven't actually changed your IP address.

Using a VPN will not give you anonymity, but, will give you a certain amount of privacy.
None of the security services or the Police can be trusted to not abuse any powers given them. So looking for anything that can actually preserve your privacy and protecting yourself from the general surveillance trawling that has been and is prevalent (Prism and Tempora) would make sense.

I've got nothing to hide, they'll soon get bored reading my emails and internet search history.

The nothing to hide argument is not really a good one......In fact it is a dangerous one.
THIS is an older article on the subject, but, even more relevant today than it was then.

I think people who take effort to hide their browsing history are most likely the ones to be targeted. :)

Remember, they'll need a court order to get the data. (According to the last news article I heard about this).
