Starting salary in a call centre these days is around £12.8K. Thats inbound customer service type roles. If you're half inclined towards sales, you could earn £15K to £18K OTE. The targets are hardly stretching.
Thats a pretty good wage for someone just out of school i would have thought OR for someone with no previous skills. 6 months on the phones and you've a good chance of getting into a trainer role, quality, maybe IT, or team management.
£30K should be easily achieveable within 5 years if you're good at what you do. Like any job, you get out of it what you put in.
Senior Management positions command very strong salaries, and are in line with Senior Management roles in other industries.
Thats your standard outsourcing call centre. A bit of experience in there should get you into somewhere like Prudentional, HBOS or Santander. Again, all of these companies heavily encourage promotion from within into other aspects of their business.
£30k a year? In a call centre, are you having a laugh? :rotfl:0 -

Not in the least. I know people in Call Centres on easily twice that.
After 5 years, however you should be aiming either will into people management or into the HR, Training or Support functions.
First level management is Team Leads, second level, something like a junior Ops manager.
Clearly though, if you're a brain dead dodo who doesnt want to engage either with the company or with a career then by that stage you're either still going to be on the phones, will have left for some other low level job, or have been managed out.0 -

Yes indeed.I've just been informed I'm having a tax audit next month.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
If shes getting £1,500 a day every day, why are you worried about security in your role? I'd be a man of leisure....
Wifie has a permie job, pays well so even if i didnt work we could maintain our lifestyle. Throwing sixes at the minute with contracting, so as long as people are paying me the money, i'm happy to keep taking it.....
Probably gets away with charging 60% of the day on average. Unfortunately its not like IT contracting , there are other support costs that eats into the rate. Still doing really well but I'm too young to retire... So I'm told.0 -

I agree with you but the vast majority of workers will be the ones on the phones making crap money.

Yes, indeed. However whilst the "in the door" basic pay isnt fantastic, there are just as much prospects in contact centres - in fact in many ways more - than there are in any other business.
It would be like saying that in IT the wages are naff because the starting salary can be quite low. Whereas in reality, theres much more happens once you've a bit of experience.
If you're happy to sit on the phones, or too brain dead to do anything else, then yes, you'll be an agent for all eternity. If you've any sort of drive and ability, you can do very well for yourself.
Several other things of note about call centres :-- Theres generally a very high percentage of under 25s, most of whos pay just sponsors their social life.
- There is a high attrition rate.
- For every 100 agents roles, theres probably 10 team leads, 1 Ops Mgr, 1 trainers, 1 HR person, 1 support person.
So if you're one of 50 agents, chances are 60% of your colleagues will have left within 3-5 years and half the remainder are dolts and / or have no career aspirations, so your chances of getting up the ladder and into one of the 5 team lead positions or the couple of support roles are quite strong.0 -

Oh you really are a "glass is half empty" kind of gal arent you?
Not at all. I'm just seeing a lot of negative economic news locally.
You know a few people earning more than the average in the private sector = fact.
The average salary here is lower than elsewhere, and it's getting lower with the loss of thousands of well-paid jobs = fact.
20,000 jobs are to be lost in the public sector alone. That's huge.I really struggle with that statistic - are they really saying public sector staff are paid 41% more than private sector on average?
Yes, possibly for menial admin jobs, but theres no way that applies further up the ladder.
There are some seriously high public sector salaries, believe me. Even at mid-range levels. Plus the public sector employs lots of professionals and graduates - solicitors, accountants and the like. Ever seen the pay scales?saverbuyer wrote: »I agree with you but the vast majority of workers will be the ones on the phones making crap money.

Exactly.
Sure, motorguy makes a point - there are opportunities to progress in most lines of work, even call centres. But the average salary is low.
