Gallaghers is great money, I know an ordinary operator, working 3 x 12 hour night shifts per week = 36hrs, no Saturday nights and his gross wage is £34k. Michelin about 10k less for more hours

And therein lies the problem - neither of those salaries are sustainable these days for an ordinary operator.

I'd like to see a comparison in expenses across the regions. Rent in London is colossal for instance, and transport is not cheap either if you're forced to commute. A low wage in NI is possibly not as bad as it seems. Any way to find out?

I worked with a guy in Hatfield who was on £45K a year. He was paying £1200 a month in rent and walked to work. He said he could get £55-60K a year in london doing the same job, but he'd lose the bulk of it in travelling.

The same job here in NI would have gotten him £40K - £45K.

Was there never any move to cut pay and keep the factory open?

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's public sector full-time earnings continued to be significantly higher than in the private sector - the difference is just over 41%.

I really struggle with that statistic - are they really saying public sector staff are paid 41% more than private sector on average?

Yes, possibly for menial admin jobs, but theres no way that applies further up the ladder.

Top of the public sector matches top of the private.

Top may do - bit in the middle is different - heads of department and stuff like that. Typically paid significantly less in the public sector.

Well - in my experience anyway.

Salaried jobs are pretty much the same I'd guess.

Big money comes with self employment.

Indeed. I went self employed at this IT malarky at the tail end of last year. Decent contracts about and great rates

I've been paying myself dividends for a few years now. It's been good but the chancellor has me in his sights.
I couldn't do day rate, not enough security for me. The OH is self employed day rate. With hourly billing of £200+ gets away with it.

Yes, i know what you mean. IR35 is a problem for me, and also they are proposing as of next year travel expenses arent tax deductable, which would be painful if i were commuting weekly to the mainland again.

No, me neither. I work on min 3 months contracts, but based on a standard day rate. Just getting an extension put into place which will see me working for the same company until end of feb (been with them since august and working from home, but would allow me to draw a decent salary until the end of next year if needs be.

Have been very pleased so far. The longest between contracts has been a fortnight, and the last one i finished on the thursday, interview on the friday, started on the monday.

If shes getting £1,500 a day every day, why are you worried about security in your role? I'd be a man of leisure.... :D

Wifie has a permie job, pays well so even if i didnt work we could maintain our lifestyle. Throwing sixes at the minute with contracting, so as long as people are paying me the money, i'm happy to keep taking it.....
