Buffy's Savings Diary

I have been here a really really really long time. 8 years.
It is almost embarrassing! However I have made lots of friends and do think it is the best place on the internet. So I don't care! and even if this is the debt free diaries board it is the nicest place so even though now I am saving I am staying here.
I joined in 2007, around 25000 in debt. It took me until June 2011 to pay it off and I have had a regular credit card habit. In Nov 2012 I borrowed 7000 pounds and paid that off by March of this year. I have never really got the hang of savings in all this time. or indeed paying off debt super quick. I still do a lot on my CC and have kept it paid off each month.
At one point I paid off 660 pounds a month to the debt. I would like to do the same for my savings (currently 350) It is difficult now as I have a car, pets and insurance to pay each month.
However I really want my own place. I am getting a bit old to get a mortgage now so need to do something in the next 6 months regarding my future and what to do next.
Ideally, I would like a buy to let property, so I need a HUGE deposit for that.....or if I wanted to buy my own place either way I need money...So that is the plan. Save save save.
I have been thinking a lot about how I give my time to earn money. And how every pound of my wages is precious because it represents my time spent on the planet and have to stop wasting money on crap from Amazon/Ikea/Tiger/Pets at Home.
I owe myself about 30,000 pounds.
Aims
1. 5000 in the ISA by January 2016 - had a rethink and have achieved this goal - 1000 in zopa. 3000 in ISA, 1000 in the tsb.
2. Use surveys to collect cash
3. Use Cashback
4. Sell unwanted stuff on Music Magpie
5. Continue decluttering (been going well)
6. No more pets (Rabbits were an expensive mistake!)
7. No bill on CC
8. Have a 1000 pounds emergency fund (by March 2016)
9. Leave my job (July 2016)
10. Use what I have at home first before buying anything

Another diary door opened, always love to follow your story Buffy. Savings targets seem realistic and achievable. What are you planning to do when you leave your job next year? Stay in teaching or do something else?
|I was also thinking of buying a buy to let and let my Mum live in it (if she want to that is) so she can pay me rent and I know it wont be trashed :rotfl:"These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -

*ponders doing the same with my Mum*
I did look at a cheap flat a few weeks ago - even took out a loan........but returned it almost immediately. As a long term go I want to have a buy to let and work as a supply teacher. I might end up staying at my job till next Christmas to up my pay but if the last eight weeks are anything to go by I won't last. If we get a decent Ofsted it might be different but that is anyone's guess. I genuinely couldn't call it.
It has just occurred to me that I need to pay my car insurance in January. I was supposed to have saved for it but lets gloss over that.
Hmmm. Think it might have to be a 0% card jobby. As taking the money out of my ISA will lose me interest. that is annoying. But actually ok. Focus to pay it off.
Best get on with tidying up my room.
Keep watching Hawaii 5 O Can I go to Hawaii please?

Woohoo - shiny new diary bufster!
What about buying a place and renting out a room for income?
Or do you need to stay living with your mum?
Great goals - stay focused and everytime you then of spending think of how that's one less day, month, year or whatever towards your new home.
I hope you do manage to quit if that's right for you. As you know, that's what I've done even though it's scary.
Good luck!

I don't want to stay, can't believe I am not giving my notice tomorrow. But need to keep earning.mothernerd wrote: »Happy new diary. Remember wherever you go, you take yourself and your followers with you (hope that doesn't sound too stalkerish).
Not stalkerish at all. I like the visits!
So I have opted to go paperless for my statements apart from my Credit cards. I check online almost daily and cannot bear the endless filing of crap.
Also checked my credit rating 5/5 so am happy with that.
Need to hoover upstairs. ugh.
