When I undertake a similar blitz, I go from keeping totally unnecessary things 'because you never know' to binning totally necessary things because I am so fed up with the whole tedious business.

Packing plus waiting for phone calls on a dingy wet day is no fun at all.

I do think keeping the bed and replacing the mattress is a good idea.

I am with LL on oven cleaning. After being out of action for 18 months with a husband who thinks cooking is putting chips and similar in the oven, I decided to swallow my pride and let a professional deal with it. It was surprisingly affordable.

I think an oven should be big enough to roast a whole chicken. Much better value than pieces, no effort, and with a freezer can provide several meals.

I'm also with her re decent ready meals occasionally.

Where does my expletive deleted Thanks button go?
  • I am a serious minimalist and take the view that if I have not used something in the last year it goes. My husband though sadly, not so much is a hoarder but would be much worse if I was not around to curb him ;)

I am with Wendy and LL about professional ovencleaners. Horrible job so much better to pay someone except I have used that ovenpride kit you get in B and M for a pound and is pretty good.

These days I often cook enough for 2 days on the trot - cottage pie, roast, casseroles etc and use the slow cooker lots. Decent ready meals from waitrose are also a lifesaver for the weekend or days I am working when I don't feel like cooking.

  • Just called the removal men to see if they could do Poole..
They can and I'm awaiting a quote. I will use them.
They asked me if I want to go down in the van with them.
Not sure. I'm not due to go to Poole until Thursday but the move is Wednesday .
Gonna change location with the big yellow storage now ..

I have forgotten - what day do you actually legally complete.

I've had a great afternoon, a bag of books ready for the chazzer and a good tidy up.

I splashed out and bought a load of new art posters and easy DIY frames. Mainly impressionists and 60s pop art. So we have been busy putting them up.

They look fab. Cost less than £100 for a whole new look. Very MSE.:rotfl:

I guess my style is "cosy minimalism". Plain walls, no wallpaper allowed!!! No clutter or knick knacks. Just art on the walls, plants and flowers and a couple of pieces of statement pottery or some quirky glassware.

I tend to decorate in the Japanese way. I just put a few pieces out at a time. Then I rotate them with the seasons. That way there's always something new or novel to look at.

Yes it can be possible to declutter too much and then regret it. I Have done that, especially with clothes.

It's getting the right balance isn't.

Bizarrely enough, I actually complete on Monday 21st. So, why am I moving my stuff so early : trying to find cheap b&b in Poole . Ended up getting a studio. The day available was only Thursday .
The removal men I am now using , can do weds only. It's short notice. I have to take everything that looks like it's gonna work.

I like buying posters and prints. Mostly landscape . 1or 2 proper tour posters . Cartoon also. I'm after vintage snoopy / Charlie Brown /peanuts from years ago pre 1990:)
    Plain walls also :)
Must say that big yellow are great to deal with so far. The removal man that they recommended seems like a really top bloke .

Just cleared my two bedrooms. One of these , will be used to store all the stuff I'm packing plus stuff that's gonna be chucked .
My bed can be dismantled .Handy. The mattress ..ugh.:)
I think,, only the 2 settees will,be in the living room and very thing else may fit in bedroom 2 until the big day .
    I think so,

A few days between vacating and LC is a good idea. It makes life a lot less stressful. I usually do this, it just takes the pressure off. I can then go back and blitz the place at my leisure.

Although tbh I'm at the stage in life when I would be more inclined to get a cleaning company in. They are good value for money and cheaper then a Physio when I wreck my back trying to do much in one go.:rotfl:

I'm finally learning a bit of common sense!!

It's so much easier to give it a good thorough clean when the place is empty and a professionals can do the job in a couple of hours.

I have heard good things about "Big Yellow" but not used them.

Re the mattres......that will have to go to the tip. No one take will take it.

DS2s new girlfriend is coming for dinner tonight. Is that the sound of distant wedding bells I can hear.

That fab new hat - a big purple floppy hippy number :rotfl: I bought in the sales last week might come in handy soon. :D
  • Sounds like things are moving along for you AC. Are you just taking a suitcase down to Poole then on Thursday? Can you shove magazines out with the recycling?

Lovely mild weather down here in Cornwall today so hopefully Poole will be the same on Thursday when you move down. Hope you sorted the finances to sort out storage and removal and rent b and b for 11 days. That should give you enough time to sort out a short term let. Poole quay sounds lovely and a nice little holiday for you to get acquainted with Poole.

    That's the plan enthusiastic :)
B&b paid for. Relying on my other brother to bail me out one more time, for removal and storage.
He's not fussed , but it's mounting up how much I owe him over the last year. ( mums funeral, trying to keep a roof over my head etc.)
Will pay him next on the twenty something .
Will pay all on the 20 something or other, and be done with it all.

Getting peed off with my brother( I haven't bothered phoning him again)
Same with his mate. Need to know if he can do a rubbish run .
I suppose if he can't, I'll have to get someone on Saturday that can .

So: weds my belongings move . I move to Poole just for a day , so I can pay him and pay big yellow storage.
Come home same day. Sleep. Get up . Hopefully rubbish run can be done.
    Go to b&b .
Go back on Monday to check everything , one more time .
Then , back to Poole .
Oh, and if I get ballot tkt for Metallica , I will go to that on Friday at Waterloo .
I'm confusing myself so I'll leave it there ..
  • Great stuff, Poole Quay is nice, I have been there. If it were me, I think I might go down with them and stay in a travelodge or perhaps your mate could put you up overnight. And if I could afford it, have a one off professional clean.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
