Contacted CBC and asked why Start Rescue was not included. The reply asked if I was referring to home start cover?
I explained trying to compare prices and benefits and wondered why Start Rescue was not mentioned?? CBC replied it was not covered under their policy!
I said Start Rescue was a provider of vehicle breakdown cover. Was told they didn't work with them. I have European breakdown cover with Start Rescue (recommended by Which?) and am very satisfied, they even have an app to report the breakdown. Last years premium £49.72 - my renewal premium in Feb 20 £57.15. I shall be renewing :)
    Hi there,

Please accept our apologies for not replying to your comment sooner, unfortunately the notification for this didn't reach us.
Start Rescue are a separate broker/assistance provider to CBC and we don't currently work with them or offer their products on our website; but we're glad you managed to find the right cover for your needs in the end.
    Kind regards,
    The CompareBreakdownCover Team

I took out a policy with CBC in January. This week I travelled 60 miles to visit a friend. On getting back in my car I switched the engine on but the car wouldn’t move the handbrake has stuck. I called  the breakdown service and explained the situation. The customer services assistant decided it was recovery situation and that a roadside assistant mechanic would not be able to help. I was then asked to tell them which local garage I wanted to use, so that recovery could be arranged. I explained that I was in an unfamiliar area, had no internet access and didn’t know of a local garage. They explained that they would be unable to help me with selecting a garage.
Eventually a friendly local phoned a local garage for me, who assured me it was probably a sticking hand brake. Within an hour they were in situ and after 5 minutes had released the handbrake and had me on my way. No parts no recovery required. They also refused any payment, when I explained the situation I had been left in. I have complained to CBC who on considering my complaint agreed that it was a recovery situation, even though it was fixed in situ. It was also confirmed that it was my responsibility to select a local garage. Having checked my policy it only states.....a garage of your choice....it does not explain that CBC does not provide a selection for to to chose from.

I hate to think what would have happened if I had been stuck in a rural location with no local garage in the vicinity. I would not recommend CBC, if you are a single woman driver, you will be left to your own devices despite having paid for a service providing roadside assistance and recovery.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback.

We’re really sorry that you feel our breakdown cover has let you down. We never want any of our customers be in this situation.

We'd also love to take a closer look at what you've experienced, so If you could pop onto our website and use our contact us form (https://www.comparebreakdowncover.co.uk/contact.aspx), remembering to include your policy number, we'll look into this further for you as soon as we can.

    Many thanks,

  • My fully comprehensive (except Europe) breakdown cover, with national recovery, accommodation ect, on my 13 year-old car is £40 a year with CBC.

  • I thought I'd try CBC for breakdown cover for my son. I got quotes and selected the option we wanted. Went through to pay only to be told he's not old enough to purchase breakdown cover! He has to be 18!  So we've now gone elsewhere. Seems crazy to me that he can learn to drive and pass his test at 17, buy a car, tax and insure it at 17 but can't buy breakdown cover! We'd selected National Breakdown. BTW, he'll be 18 in December! AH well, seems crazy to me but they've lost the business now!
  • I received a renewal reminder from Greenflag for breakdown cover which they said would be auto renewed. I have never asked for auto renewal & renewal price was £74 for the same cover as last year.
After going to their website for a quote for same cover the price was £49. Big difference so cancelled their auto renewal & bought same policy online with Greenflag. Lesson there -never accept renewal quotes without comparing.
  • Oh dear.  Bought cover for my daughter - paid for platinum cover and policy says silver.  No phone number to call.  Say they will respond to my email in 2 days.  Wish I had gone with Autoaid!

It's an insurance product isn't it? So may be a legal reason out of their hands why the purchaser has to be 18. If you were buying vehicle cover rather than personal cover, could you not have bought the policy on behalf of your son?

RAC cover via Aviva costing less than half of RAC's new customer quote.
I've been with AA for years, and getting fed up with ringing them every year to get a sensible renewal cost, I decided to check the breakdown insurance cover offered by my current car insurer Aviva which happens to be using the RAC.
I was amazed to see that Joint cover for Roadside+Recovery+AtHome was £86.
So I went to the RAC's web site and chose the same joint cover Roadside+Recovery+AtHome as a new RAC customer and it gave a quote of £186.
I was prepared to see a small reduction by going through my car insurer, but less than half the price of a new RAC customer buying directly from the RAC!
I've been through the policy document on the Aviva site, and it essentially covers the same, apart from the Aviva cover additionally including anyone driving a nominated vehicle, and the Aviva cover not mentioning "free accident care" and "free legal cover" which is mentioned on the RAC web site. But I find it difficult to understand how these would account for such a massive difference.
I would jump at it, but the RAC-via-Aviva quote seems too good to be true. Can anyone think of anything I might be missing?

  • Trying to work out CBC and National Breakdown. Looks like National Breakdown are the insurers/provider but I would phone CBC if I need breakdown help?

Does vehicle cover work whoever the driver is (not just me who pays for the policy)?

Is service provided by a local garage? Not a fleet of vehicles like AA, RAC or GreenFlag?

The price seems good. How have people found the experience?
