Thank you, there might be light at the end of the tunnel then! She is 18 and thinks she knows everything :rotfl:
As a side mention, an Aldi store is opening up next to our Morrisons soon and when I popped in there yesterday I was pleasantly surprised with the price of the food, it seems to have dropped in price. Not sure if it's because of Aldi moving in or if it's an across the board drop. I got a bag of peppers which contained 3 red, 4 orange and 1 green for £1.270 -
Exactly, he said add a stock cube. When have you ever seen anyone cut stock cubes into quarters.
They're all full of salty stock cubes as well.MSE_Andrea wrote: »Lol, I love that a post about a programme on waste turned into a Vegetarian and chicken debate. Some great points made
Waste is something I'm really trying to improve on at home. I'm trying to encourage my family not to produce waste because it saves money and the environment but it's a slog convincing the rest of them when they're not as "on board" as me so I'm hoping my other half will watch the programme with me and take note.
We've worked with WRAP/Lovefoodhatewaste, The Rubbish Diet, and ZeroWasteWeek in the last year or so on a couple of projects that help show people where they can reduce waste and save money. It'll be interesting to see what they think of the programme too
I expect on the Old Style board you'll see a lot of things mentioned in the programme that you do as part of every day life anyway.
I'll probably sit through the programme saying.. I do that, yes I do that, and that... oh now I hadn't thought of that!
I have almost no food waste at home, but I think it is much easier if you are cooking for a family rather than just one person.0 -

Many of the comments on this thread have been about farmers ploughing mis-shapes back into the ground, but the average family is throwing away £700 worth of food a year, and I think that HFW will have an uphill slog trying to change that.0 -

Stock cubes - I don't buy stock cubes (personally wouldn't like to think what ingredients might be in some of the more "commercial" ones).
But I buy the equivalent (from a health food store in my case).
Marigold vegetable stock.
It comes in packet/can type containers. The size of it I buy is 500 grammes worth (says it makes 25 litres on the packaging). So I just figure that a mean teaspoon worth equates to about one stock cube and measure out what I want accordingly. So - if I want half a stock cube for a recipe - then I use half a mean teaspoon worth and so on.
As I need to keep salt to a minimum I had a look at this range.
The standard range is still quite high in salt - between 0.9g to 1g per 250ml
The low salt range is better - at 0.5g per 250 ml
Interestingly, best of all is their low salt stock cube range, at 0.1g per 250 ml.
I currently use Kallo stock cubes, which are gluten and lactose free and at 0.1g of salt per 100ml almost as low as the Marigold stock cubes.
(All the above figures assume that the stock is made up as instructed)
I'll look out for Marigold when I next need vegetable stock cubesEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Being vegetarian and militant, in my opinion, seem to go hand in hand!
It's an age thing, MoS, I used to be like that and have met many others like that too. Self righteousness of the young, it mellows over time! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Personally - my diet changed and I cut out meat - because I "got converted" by people saying nowt, but just feeding me it.
The first meal I ever had was Yuk! - but I had some very nice ones after that and that was a lot of why I just gave up meat (plus all the other stuff too - like I cant afford "happy" meat and don't want to have unhappy cheapie mince/sausages/etc).0 -

You respect her wishes but she gives you a regular ear-bashing for eating meat.
I'd say that at age 18 she should be old enough to have more respect for alternative viewpoints.
We had some friends - well she was a meat-eater but got together with a vergetarian - who kept banging on about the fab meals they cooked.
We tried a few of them at home but always seemed to end up saying 'Well, yes, it is nice but it would be improved with a bit of minced beef'. :rotfl:0 -
Well I for one will be watching as I think anything that draws attention to waste is a great thing and I simply love Hugh!Debt - CCV £3792

At 80g per portion for a five a day portion (and 20% peeling waste) thats 10 portions of carrots for 60p.

The people who claim veg is too expensive would still complain if they gave them away.
I'm all for reducing waste, but unfortunately in the UK a lot of waste is from over supply.
1kg carrots were 39p per kilo a couple of weeks back in Aldi, they are now at 50p per kilo . We eat a big variety of veg and fruit, I also freeze extra of what is on offer. This week it is asparagus, apples, plums, butternut squash, chestnut mushrooms and kale all for 59pBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
