  • I have just received my mobile phone bill for £449.51 !!! as I used it whilst on a 2 week holiday in Turkey! Yes, I expected my bill to be large, even though i wasn't using it that much , honest, but i didn't expect it to be so HUGE. I have spoke to my provider (orange) and they're not budging! I have been with them for 13 years and spend about £50 per month ... is there anything i can do??? or does this hideous bill stand!

I think it stands. Since you were aware of the consequences before using it. My suggestion would be to see if they can work out a payment plan with you.

I need to use my (unlocked) Vodaphone in Quebec region Canada mostly for local calls and emergencies. Anybody know if I can buy a sim card in Montreal airport to use while I am there as for some reason I can text only using my Vodaphone sim. Can you buy top up cards there or do you have to register a credit card?
    Any help greatfully received.

If you buy a sim4travel card and do it through quidco they give you £4.50 back.

I was a bit concerned when I read in this week's newletter that I could be charged for unanswered calls that divert to my voicemail while I'm abroad. I'd never heard of this before and don't ever recall having been charged in the past.

However, I have just called Orange and they assure me that they do not in fact charge the person being called for calls to voicemail, whether the phone is home or abroad. Nor should they of course. The notion is quite outrageous.

Does any mobile operator do this? It's still on Martin's website but it seems unlikely that they can charge you at overseas rate for a call that is diverted immediately to voicemail.
  • I am going to the states for two weeks and looking to buy a local pay as you go sim, mainly to call within the US. Any suggestions?

    Thank you

There is advice about that earlier in this thread

I definitely had that happen to me with T-Mobile - it was a few years back though (about 3 or 4 years ago.) I got so annoyed by that that I cancelled my contract with them shortly after - it seemed so outrageous and wrong, even the guy from T-Mobile who talked me through it was embarrassed.
  • I use a AT&T Cingular PAYG card when around the US.

Not sure about T Mobile US cards and a locked T Mobile UK phone. In my opinion it would be better to get unlocked first to save any problems.

AT&T in my experience offer the best network coverage.

Don't forget on any network in the US you pay to receive calls and texts, irrespective of PAYG or contract. The plus side is all calls within the local area are free as are calls within your network.

Why does US companies charge to receive text and calls?

Because all mobile numbers have a local dialling code and it is impossible for a caller to know if they are calling a mobile or landline. Landline calls are free to the caller, so in the case of the mobile user, they pay to receive the call.
