  • I saw a thread earlier about a silver one from tescos that people said was ok - cant remember where tho, sorry - it was about £25
  • I've got a Morphy Richards Compact BM and am quite pleased with it so far. It doesn't take up too much room and is pretty quiet. Have only made basic loaves but not had any disasters. They are about £45 on amazon but I got mine second hand off ebay for £25.
  • Thanks for the replies. I haven't got anyone to go halves with me on the Panny but might get her the cookworks one which looks good value. She is new to OS and it may yet only be a flash in the pan and she will be back buying expensive and poor value for money again in the new year and the breadmaker will be shoved in the back of the cupboard!

  • I have to say, I had a Cookworks breadmaker that my mum gave me because she hardly ever used it, after I tried it I could understand why, I really couldn't get on with it :( I followed recipes to the letter ( unusual for me ! ) and nothing came out right at all. I like dense bread but the stuff the Cookworks BM produced was almost inedible.

I didn't dump it but passed it on via Freecycle with the warning that I didn't think it was much cop ! it almost put me off breadmakers for life but I am contemplating getting a Panasonic now.

  • We had the MR fastbake but it broke 3 times in the first year (paddle 'locking' each time). The third time the part was out of stock with no date for re-stocking so we got a refund. We asked on freecycle and were given a Prima which we collected yesterday. Can't comment on its breadmaking qualities as we've yet to try it but it does have the traditional loaf shape as opposed to the MR which produces a tall 'on its end' loaf.that I found quite odd (but suprisingly easy for slicing - producing square slices that fit in our toaster perfectly).

  • Ok i want to start making my own bread to save money and experiement too.

Do they all do the same? i have no idea what one to go for, but would like it to be able to make bread, rolls, pizza bases etc.

    Can anyone help please?
Hi. Ive got the Tesco job. £24.97. I am now making nice bread. Using less (1tsp) yeast than it advises. It says, somewhere on this site, that a small loaf now costs me 25p (67p Sainsbury) inc electric. I havent verified that, but am happy to make the bread. I still like to make some by hand, which is nicer still, but I bake that in gas cooker oven. And with handmade, I have to leave overnight to rise, to make nice. Yum yum
  • Hi :) I had a bread-maker years ago and gave it away, and made bread by hand, but recently I decided to get another one, But this time instead paying all that money, I went on Ebay and bought one for 3 pounds and with postage at 7 pounds it came to yup 10 pounds, Kenwood BM200 Rapid Bake. It works wonderfully and I can wake up to freshly baked fruit bread.

So before you decided on splashing out all that money check out Ebay and save yourself a few pennies, don't forget some people by items such as Breadmakers, use them twice, then abandon the poor wee mites in dark lonesome cupboards never to see the light again or until they are sold on Ebay :) where happy parents are waiting to adopt them to put them back into good use making sticky buns :D

  • Nicholas, nothing can compare to the bread my Panasonic SD-255 breadmaker makes! IMO, spending the extra is worth it. My friend has an old Morphy Richards breadmaker and you can really tell the difference between that and my new Panasonic. I wasn't sure whether to go with a cheap model or the one I've currently got, but when they pay for themselves within the year, you might as well spend the extra.

P.S. this is the review that finally convinced me!
