i heard satellite broadband is good, as you can get rid of your land line and dont pay the fees.
Im sick off paying for landline.. I hardly use it..
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:The line must be rented so the broadband signal can be sent down it.
Even if "line rental" was decoupled from the ability to make voice calls and transfered to the broadband connection instead, you would save very little.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Im looking at this on behalf of a friend and I'm not convinced the service is good enough to recommend.
I came across this article and the comments don't paint the service in a glowing light:

It is dated but some comments are recent.
Also, does anyone know if the dish has to be outside? Im assuming it does but wouldn't mind finding out for sure.
If any regular MSE peeps have any recommendations or experiences please share them.0 -

If he get sat BB and uses his mobile for calls why would a landline be needed?0 -
We use Tooway at work as the work sites move around every few months. Ideal for instant broadband communications out in the sticks as long as you have power (and line of sight to the satelite). Saves waiting for BT to install a landline!
Pretty good connection speeds but as jruk says, the vpn kills it big time. Data usage wise, will depend how much you need, pretty sure Tooway have a variety of packages available.
Also if you go over your data allocation, can top up if required rather than upgrading the package. As far as i understand, in a similar way to mobile contracts you can upgrade to the next package up fairly easily but aren't able to come back down very easily hence topping up can be useful.0 -
Evening all
I live in a rural area and although the nearest cabinet has now been fibre-enabled I am told I am not able to get it and am in the 'final 5%'. I have been offered subsidised satellite broadband instead.
Has anyone any experience of satellite broadband? Is it reliable? I use about 15Gb a month, mostly internet, email and audiobooks but would love to be able to stream films etc or for my grandchildren to be able to use their screens at the same time as I'm working (not possible right now). At the moment I am with Plusnet for bb and landline and am also wondering if I'll have to pay a huge amount to leave the contract before time.
Would be grateful to hear of anyone else's experience with satellite.0 -
I appreciate some others have already made this statement but I think it's worth repeating. IP over Satellite is designed very much for single direction bursts of data as is commonly found (in a consumer context) when browsing the web or sending email. As a result, if anyone needs a lot of bandwidth for streaming content, playing online games, etc where the latency needs to be low to function appropriately then you are going to be very, very disappointed.
Consumer applications such as those commonly carried by ADSL type bearers are not the purpose of IP over Satellite which has a myriad of commercial applications to which it is very well suited. I'd start with dllive's suggestion if you do need to go a little way off the beaten track. The views expressed here are my own.
