3:30pm - 24/10/2015 - Latest Update
The investigations by TalkTalk and the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit into the cyber attack continue. We can confirm that the latest update of our investigation is as follows:- This cyber attack was on our website not our core systems
- We can confirm that we do not store complete credit card details on the website; any credit card details that may have been accessed had a series of numbers hidden and therefore are not usable for financial transactions eg 012345xxxxxx 6789
- TalkTalk My Account passwords have not been accessed
- We now expect the amount of financial information that may have been accessed to be materially lower than initially believed and would on its own not enable a criminal to take money from your account
- The Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit criminal investigation continues

Let me paraphrase what a cyber security expert they just had on TV said about this statement..
"I hope this is true for the sake of the customers but given the level of incompetence shown by TalkTalk so far I would take all statements they make about the incident with a pinch of salt at this stage"0 -

if this is as minor as they are saying , why is the website still down , with no access to the accounts page ,
I feel at this point in time that they think we are living in damp cupboards and they are feeding us bull%h%^0 -
As I said on the other thread, as the ICO is fully involved, it's not really in her interests to go on national TV and lie through her teeth. If she did that, it would be exposed later.
Whereas it's in the interests of the media to find experts to encourage more fear and paranoia to fuel a good storyEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Why are you posting in support of Dido Harding, don't you think she and others who should have been doing a better job have to go? Or is it OK she gets £1M a year and can be a wholly ineffective leader?0 -

I'm just trying to inject some rational thought into the discussion, as there doesn't seem much of it about.
Personally, I think she will have to resign, along with other senior figures within Talk Talk, as their situation is now untenableEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Hi i contacted talktalk yesterday, the advisor told me i would be charged as i have 10 months left on my contract,i said i have lost all trust and will not be staying with them.I then asked to be put through to cancellations dept ,i spoke to a horrible advisor who told me i would be charged to have a new phone line which would cost me over £100,also i would have to get a new phone number, and finally was told not to cancel my direct debit.I then told him i want to cancel as from 25 oct ,i would not be paying a charge as what happened was nothing to do with me so take me to court if you want .He said my account would end on 25 Nov,i went on to my online banking and cancelled my DD .I contacted Sky broadband and am now going with them, also the advisor i spoke to from Sky said talk talk can't charge you for a new phone line as they do not own the phone lines ,open reach own them ,and you won't have to get a new phone number,so what talktalk are telling people are all scare tactics, which they should not be able to get away with.I hope people will stand up to these people.0

Probably not a good idea for your credit rating. You will owe TalkTalk some money which they will be entitled to even if you're not charged early termination fees. If they can't take it they may well pass the debt to a debt collector which will give you even more grief.I contacted Sky broadband and am now going with them, also the advisor i spoke to from Sky said talk talk can't charge you for a new phone line as they do not own the phone lines ,open reach own them ,
I don't think TalkTalk were suggesting that they were going to charge you for a new phone line but that whoever you moved to would need to charge you for a new phone line to be installed. If a new phone line was needed Openreach do indeed handle it and then pass on any charge to the provider who pass it on to you.and you won't have to get a new phone number,
You may need a new phone number but that depends on where your number originated in the first place. TalkTalk to Sky is LLU to LLU which can make it more difficult but not impossible. If it's an original BT number there is more chance of success.so what talktalk are telling people are all scare tactics, which they should not be able to get away with.I hope people will stand up to these people.
It's not all scare tactics although it should have been better explained to you. Sky are not being totally truthful either as they want your business. If there is now a cease on your TalkTalk line your number may not be able to transfer over.
What you should have done was switch to your new provider and let them handle the transfer which has far more chance of being successful.
I hope it goes ok for you as what has happened with TalkTalk is disgraceful but I fear that you may have given yourself problems.0
