At my school detentions weren't massively enforced. Yeah we got them all of the time but if we simply didn't turn up nothing was done about it. How times change! Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

Our school only gives after school detentions for certain things which all pupils are made well aware of.
We do give lunch time detentions for lesser misdemeanours, but if you miss it then it automatically goes to a 1 hour after school one.
Parents are always notified by post/email with sufficent notice, as they will need to collect the child.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Schools are legally allowed to give same day detentions with notice to the parent.
Eg. I'm a teacher and if a child commits a severe misdemeanour prior to 1:30pm it's a same day 1 hour detention. If it's after 1:30pm it'll be done the following day. Otherwise it's 10 mins at break/lunch/after school.0 -

And if the parent does not reply on a same day detention (perhaps they work in an office where mobiles aren't permitted, or are simply uncontactable), so you don't know whether the child will be picked up after, at which point there will be no school bus, do you still make them stay?
If they do reply and say "shift work, can't pick up child. Either you bring them to my house personally, or you let them leave at the normal time." what do you do then?Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
at my daughter's school they give lunchtime detentions, if there is to be an after-school detention its usually with a day's notice, but no detention slip, its up to the pupil to tell their parents they will be in detention the next day after school.
I usually get a text from my DD just saying she's staying late for a class (sometimes thats project work not detention, sometimes its detention).0 -

Secondary so it doesn't matter if parents respond. In most cases they don't. It's not consent, it's informing them.
If parent can't use phones at work then that number won't be their priority contact.
But if a parent did call, they could indeed renegotiate a day later etc.0 -

Begs the question, who's child is it anyway? Same parent would have to make arrangements for a child's illness.0 -
Thank you for the views, its interesting seeing it from both sides of the coin, I managed secondary school without 1 detention, touch wood DD is in yr 8 and hasn't had one, yet one of the girls in her group has had about 70 so far..........xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0

We had detention slips and if the parent wouldn't sign they couldn't enforce the detention however they would phone the parent to find out why and if the reason was deemed good enough they would change it to a lunchtime detention.
My goody goody mate was always in detention (so not so goody goody!) and I was forever forging her detention slips as her parents were horrifically strict and she would have been in so much trouble. However her getting home late was a non-event as she lived a long way out and buses were unreliable.
I had special circumstances which the school were aware of toward the end of school (I was a carer for my parents, they had paid carers who used to come but I had to be home to let them in when they called, they also used to call in the morning before I left for school) so I wasn't allowed to be kept after school, if I were to have a detention it would have to be a lunchtime one which to be fair didn't bother me in the slightest as we stayed in our form rooms at lunchtime mostly as there was no yard/playing field.
I was good though- never had a detention!*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
I was a real goody goody at school and never got into trouble - yet managed to have detention at least once a month! simply because if some of the class misbehaved the whole class were given either lunchtime or hometime detention.
and this caused all sorts of problems at home. at lunchtime mum would put my dinner on the table at the time I was expected in - if I didn't show up or was late it went in the bin. at hometime mum would ground me for having detention even though it wasn't my fault (there were some right gits in my class and they were experts at causing havoc behind the teachers back and the poor teacher wouldn't be able to pick out the culprits so we all copped it.
as schools always proclaim they are readying pupils for 'the real world' I wonder what world they think we all inhabit? I have NEVER had detention in ANY of the jobs I have done. I don't agree with detention, never have and never will.0
